"The architect was professional and delivered plans as promised at a fair and reasonable price. I contacted the architect's sister company regarding the actual construction. I found them to be responsive and have contracted with them to do the work. Their contractor pulled permits with the city and saved me the trouble of doing so myself. They will start this job in a few days and I anticipate they will do a professional and satisfactory job. I would recommend them to others and utilize them if I needed additional work at my home."

"Alex is a fantastic Architect engineer who transformed our mansion project positively. He has thoughtfully helped us in planning, obtaining permits, and visited the home many times to make the vision perfect. His drawings were approved very quickly by the city because they were done with so much attention to detail. He keeps it simple and delivers. His prices are fair, we are paying a bonus when the house sells!"

Architects questions, answered by experts

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

British architect John Nash is credited with creating the Italianate style of architecture. The style was further popularized in the U.S. by landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing and architect Calvert Vaux. The style spread across the U.S. due to Downing’s popular book on the style and the availability of plans and materials due to the mass production of the Industrial Revolution.

While you will always work with a team of professionals at some point during your home build, homeowners with experience can take on some part of the process. Manage the initial brainstorm, brief writeup, and floor layout phase with minimal assistance before contacting a general contractor. And while you can purchase stock blueprints for some home designs, it's always best to speak with professionals when choosing one ideal for your property.

Building a house without blueprints is not advised. It will prevent you from obtaining necessary building permits and meeting building codes and is likely to result in shoddy construction and unsafe living conditions. Detailed blueprints ensure that a house is built to exact specifications and is constructed safely and structurally stable.

A home elevator is a fantastic way to improve your home’s accessibility. Elevators allow anyone, even those who use wheelchairs or walkers, to safely move between floors within your home.

Dumbwaiters may allow you to move items up and down floors, and stair lifts can move people up and down, but elevators are the best option if you need space for people, their belongings, and/or mobility aids such as wheelchairs.

That said, home elevators cost more than other options, such as stair lifts. Consider your needs and your budget when deciding the best way to make your home more accessible to a person with a disability or a person who is aging in place.
