In answer to my motivations, I prefer small manageable projects with quick turnaround times and more personal contact with clients . My fees are based on the Scope of Work (SOW) and vary if engineering is required (Structural, HVAC, Civil, Electrical). I do not charge for initial contact nor determination of the scope of work (what we call programming) and a fee proposal.
