During the beginning of the process the contractor was available at all times. Once the contract was signed, he began to communicate less often. First of all, he dug the pool before the official permit was released by the county. As a result, our project was set back another 2 1/2 weeks. We had rain in between and ultimately became our responsibility to remove a palm root ball when it fell into the over dug pool. This was an additional cost that we should not have had to incur. The process itself was extremely slow. His excuse was always "weather permitting." What I believe is that "his guys" worked full time jobs with other companies and were only available when work was slow - in most cases was the weekend. It took four months for water to be in the pool and 6 months for him to complete the permit so that we would receive a CO.
Notes:
We had the excess soil from the dig stored on our property for 10 weeks - a 25 foot by 3 1/2 pile, plus additional piles on other end of property. The rebar and excess plumbing supplies were also stored on the property until we offered to toss it for him.
The pool and deck design was exactly what we had agreed upon. However, the tile was not installed correctly. There is a pattern to the tile that was not followed; luckily, it is not noticeable to most. Grout smeared on decking as well as excess mortar on pavers. The deck is a mess. While trimming the excess from the rounded edges, the saw cut into the coping into a couple of places. He has yet to fix and we doubt he will. The pavers were not set on fully compacted soil and began to sink after only a couple of weeks. He only fixed the section that they missed with mortar on one side. Lastly, the pipes to the pump is leaking again. He was notified and agreed to come back the following week. We have not heard from him.
Be aware: Request the contract to be very specific.
- Our contract stated marble, he brought over brown/tan granite, not marble, that did not even come close to matching our pool design. We were offered a credit of $75 and had to purchase a new piece on our own.
- The tile on the spa was installed only on the face. We had to request it to be extended to the back per the contract (back was to be stucco). We also had to pay extra for the colored grout.
- We were given a $250 credit for the permit. Naive to permit fees we were not happy when we received our incidentals bill - the permit actually cost $268 for the pool and $268 for the deck. He also tried to charge us for his reinspection fee. After dispute, he finally agreed to remove the fee. He also charged us to have his plans put on disk which we chose not to argue. Keep in mind - none of these extra services were discussed prior to the billing.
- Told after the dig it would take a couple of weeks - it took 4 months for water and 6 months for the CO
Advice: Do your homework and go with a company that has been in business longer and has their own full time team.
