Earthworks Landscape

About us

For 35yrs Earthworks has been designing and installing South Florida landscapes for all budgets and all types of tastes. Larry Dieterich is a certifiable plant freak whose passion for unusual and interesting plants makes for unique and longlasting landscapes. Having traveled throughout the world researching and collecting unusual palms, plants, bromeliads and aroids I am bored by the mundane and predictable pallete so commonly seen in the average yard. This is not to say i install plants so rare they require specialized maintenance and watering. I believe a good landscape design should serve the test of time, be in scale with the area of work, have strong "curb appeal " and is easily maintained. And of course have moderate to low watering needs. I am known, at least in name, by nearly anyone worthwhile in the south florida nursery, plant and landscape world. Several photos of myself can be seen in the foremost authoritative text on palms," An encyclopedia of cultivated palms" by Paul Craft (my best friend).I have written many articles on landscaping and design for a home improvement magazine. Insured and licensed, I occasionally charge a small deposit($100-200) for a landscape sketch, which is refunded against any work contracted, (provided the work is contracted in full). I am Earthworks... the head hole digger, designer, rock placer, truck driver, delivery boy and my own worst critic. All attributes that ensure your work is installed as best it can be. Warranty policies; Plants want to live, even in a vacant lot there may just be weeds but plant life is evident and unavoidable. If a plant we install dies there is a reason and a solution. Numerous factors are at play in the urban environment, it may be our fault or it may be your fault and depending on who, what and where the fault lies determines the approach to a resolution. Labor is a commodity we can replace, the dead plant may not be. However service is the single most memorable quality a client refers to, and Earthworks is commited to prompt reliable service. Rock work and boulder installation as well as waterfall work is a special talent of Earthworks. A huge fan of Graham Stuart Thomas, Larry "sees" elevation and rockwork as an asset when and where it is feasible and more importantly, be esthetically appropriate. Not as an afterthought or an "add-on" to compliment the final invoice! But I do not do multi-colored mulch/gravel or cheesy little stacked stone walls around the base of a palm!! Budget is usually criteria one to most clients and I am mindful to accomodate the plant design and selection within the desired budget. However, if that budget is unrealistic for the area to be covered I will work with the client to stage the project or, phase down the scope of plant sizes and spacings. I charge an hourly labor rate of $105 for a crew separate from the plant and materials cost. My Nursery, is a ten acre tropical paradise replete with a 25 foot swing over our alligator inhabited pond. Visitors are welcome 7 days a week provided they call for an appointment and children are welcome...to weed anything! The important part of selecting any contractor is establishing a level of trust. I'm Larry and I thrive on trust. I did not choose this profession for the money making capabilities it provides, or the short hours and health benefits. I do it because I love it, I strain to be pragmatic and realistic in my design and plant selections. I have 10 acres of plants so I understand maintenance..believe me. More importantly I know plants and what works and where to get them and how to make a yard look amazing, all within a reasonable budget. Please read the reviews here on AngieslList, I am not the fastest landscaper but possibly the most serious and I greatly appreciate your taking the time to read this rant/Bio. I hope you might consider me for your landscape project to whatever degree that may entail. Sincerely, Larry D...

Excellent! Larry designed a perfect layout for our house. He knows the soil, grading conditions, and plants to use and is easy to work with, answering all our questions. He removed all the old landscaping as needed, included the trees we wanted to keep in his design, re-did the sprinkler system to water the new plants, and explained everything as he went along. We will continue to use his services. He is the ultimate professional.

Have to tell you, the best experience from this company.   If you ever need an honest, reliable and very knowledgeable Landscaper/Tree service, I would highly recommend  Larry of Earthworks;  He knew exactly what kind of trees to plant, where to plant them, prices very very reasonable. We will definitely be using his services in the future and will be recommending him to everyone  of our neighbors. Thanks again Larry for the great job.

"This was an out-of-town customer working w a difficult foreclosed home and trying hard to do right by the city code enforcement. Fortunately, being as old as a tree myself and having many local connections, I know the city horticulturalist personally and was able to help them get the needed trees installed of a type and size that suited the small lot and architectural style of this older home. I'm grateful for the work and the clients belief and confidence in my choices."

Larry and his team were professional, knowledgeable, and friendly from the initial visit to the final details. We explained to Larry broadly what our problems were (everything was dead in our backyard) and what we were hoping to achieve (dense screening, low maintenance plants, a tropical look, and wildlife-friendly landscaping), and then we let him take it from there. We know very little about plants and felt confident from talking to him that he knows A LOT, so we felt comfortable letting him determine what would work best based on our desired outcome. I can not stress enough how thrilled we are with the final product. The yard has been completely transformed. It is exactly what we were hoping for but could never in a million years have planned, purchased, and planted ourselves. Larry is extremely patient in explaining all the options, plants, growing patterns, etc. and is truly invested in the outcome. His team is as professional and friendly as he is. I wholeheartedly recommend Earthworks to anyone looking for a landscaper that is deeply knowledgeable, easy to work with, detail oriented, and committed to a great final product.

"Yay me...I sound like a broken record but any successful job is a two way effort. Here again I had two very interested, trusting intelligent clients whose biggest asset was trust. I cannot thank them enough for that and look forward to working with them again in the future as the garden matures and evolves."

Larry's among the best.  He put his heart and soul into transforming our hideous yard into a welcoming and beautiful oasis.  Our architect had done a tremendous job redesigning the interior and I wanted the outside to be just as gorgeous.  And I got it!  The scene's a jawdropper.  And with Larry, you get a consummate professional without the ego which so frequently accompanies such skill.  He constantly asked for my input and spent hours mulling the design.  How often do you find anyone willing to put that much care into their work.  This business isn't Larry's job, it's his passion.  And the landscape he created here isn't just a garden, it's my Eden.

We absolutely love Larry!  From the start, Larry met with us to go over our preferences for style, plant varieties and expectations. He is very hands on and the most knowledgeable landscape designer we've ever worked with - creative, passionate and extremely talented.  The plans he creates are sustainable to the area and fit in perfectly with the environment.  He created a landscape oasis for us out of a blank slate for our front and back yards, and it is better than we could ever have imagined.  The best thing to do is just let Larry do his thing, he will always come up with a perfect design for you, and will put many hours in making sure it is perfect. Thank you Angies List for the recommendation - best contractor we have worked with in South Florida.

"I should have paid them! This couple are every contractors dream, very, very did I emphasize the very yet? Patient !! And I think it paid off. As usual what were the big plus factors? Architecture, setting, existing established trees and CLIENT Interest and enthusiasm. It was a pleasure and privilege to work at their home...especially when their D O G was out to greet me!! I can't thank them enough for this opportunity and the great review here."

In August 2014 EarthWorks/Larry Dieterich completed a $25,000 landscaping project for us. We were thrilled and gave Larry a 5-star review.

Larry came back in December, replaced plants as needed at his cost.

I called Larry in early March. I hadn't paid him for December and apologized for my mistake. The charge was approximately $350.00. In the past 6 weeks I have emailed and called Larry at least 7 times. I have yet to hear from him.

I need Larry to replace plants that have died in a key focal point in the front walkway. Now I am using someone else and paying again for work I already paid for.

I like Larry and I don't like giving him a poor review on Angie?s list, but his complete lack of response to my multiple phone messages and emails leaves me with no choice. I thought we'd be customers for life, I guess not.
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"I guess I am getting this review and not a check. Anyone reading this should read the review this client wrote on page 4 of my reviews dated Aug 18 2014. I do not understand why I would be asked to do work, complete that work and the warranty work, be told I would receive payment and instead get this bad review. Now I'm expected to return and do MORE maintenance work?! As I have pointed out before...only the non-paying clients write poor reviews, maybe to justify their actions. Oh well, I'm sure the "next company" will work with no deposit and hope to get paid in 5 months....or get a review like mine."

It is rare to meet someone, these days, who still cares about quailty of their work and takes such pride in every detail.   Larry is just such a person.   He was hands on (and hands in) with every phase of the work done.   His expansive knowledge of plants was simply amazing.   He went above and beyond helping us with things he really did not have to, which was greatly apprecitated.  The job turned out better than we could have imagined.   We look forward to working with him again in the near future. I would give an A+, if they had them!!
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"Well the clients failed to mention they had a rare "ringer" in their corner, decent architecture. That and the ability to "see" what I coerced them to believe would be a reflection of that architecture. I have probably overused the T word (trust) but what a difference it makes and cinched the project here again. The clients willingness to back my design suggestions deserves most of the credit in the success of the end result. It went so far as to carry over to installing a rain chain which perfectly complimented another detail of the home. I was grateful to be included in this project and trusted to handle it as I saw fit. They are being politely and selectively forgetful by 2K with the budget (which I had hoped would be closer to 5-6K ) when including a ridiculous dumpster charge, additional sod and labor. But again, financing a design often involves unexpected, yet crucial components to make the work succeed. Thank you both for being so supportive!!"

I was in a bind and called Larry at 10am today. A different landscaper had planted hedges around my fence too far out and on my neighbor's property line. The sprinkler company is coming out on Saturday to lay new drip lines for the hedges and I needed the hedges moved right away. Larry was in the area and came over right away to give me an estimate. We agreed upon a very reasonable price. Larry showed up right after lunch and finished the job in well under 2 hours. The hedges look great!!! He was very careful to insure the hedges got plenty of water when he transplanted them and planted them in a nice, straight line! i couldn't be more pleased with his work. Larry even talked to me about how to finish up the lawn in the back yard and made suggestions for some landscaping in my front yard. I will DEFINITELY be calling upon Larry to do some more work in my yard! A very good experience, thanks Larry!

We contacted earthworks, chris diamond , he was quick with a phone call back . Made an appointment to come look at our property. He was there on time . We talked about what we needed to have done on a weekly basis. He gave us contacts to check his references. We decided to use him and so far have been very pleased.
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"Thanks for proving again how easily reviews good or bad can be posted here on AngiesList erroneously. This validates my only complaint about the site. Hardwork is rarely recognized but sour grapes(gripes) by non-paying clients and in some cases not even AL members is difficult/impossible to defend against! Now here's a good guy who will never know his work was credited to an entirely different company through no fault of his own."

Larry and his guys did a LOT! All with our consultation and approval. In the end, our HOA president has called everyone's attention to our lot to encourage them to bring theirs up to the level of ours. Nobody has succeeded, though many have upgraded, and some have copied elements of our design. The upshot is that the whole neighborhood looks better. If you want a beautiful landscape, call Earthworks. Our next-door neighbor calls Larry "the plant whisperer." Sometimes we've had to be a bit patient, but the results speak for themselves.
If you want to do landscaping on the cheap or you just want someone to do maintenance, don't call Larry. He'll only do maintenance if it's a yard that he has landscaped.

Larry, the owner, came out to the house to give us a bid on the extensive work we needed done in the backyard.  He was very nice and professional.  We didn't know exactly what we wanted but gave Larry a general idea and he ran with it.  When the crew arrived they worked hard and were all very nice.  It was a tough job but they finished in the two days as promised, even in the rain. The plants and flowers he picked were amazing and looked fantastic together.  Even the flowing lines of the plantings made our small yard look like a calming retreat, which was exactly what we told him we wanted.  We will definitely be using Larry and his company in the future and we would recommend his company to anyone looking to do some landscaping.

Update: About a month after work was complete a few plants died and we tried to contact him about replacements.  We have tried several times to reach him without success or return calls.

We came across Earthworks after our original landscaper bailed on us which turned out to be the BEST thing that could have possibly happened!! We knew after our first meeting with Larry that we were in great hands and were excited to get started. He is extremely knowledgeable, had some great ideas (things we never would have thought of?and neither did that first landscaper) was so easygoing and fun to chat with. His pricing was extremely reasonable and worked in our budget. I am actually surprised at all we were able to get done!
A previous reviewer mentioned the plant quality and unique variety of plants and I have to concur with that 100%. We have some gorgeous plants that I have never heard of or seen before and they really compliment our home and everything else that was done. People in our neighborhood are stopping in front of our home daily to get a look!
The end result has seriously surpassed any expectations we originally had and I am still amazed by the sight I now get to come home to. We are ecstatic about our experience and the end result!! I guarantee we will be using his services again. Thank you Larry!!
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"This was a fun job...rarely, and I mean very rarely do I have the privilege of converting a landscape that is fairly hideous then transforming it ( very simply and basically) into something useful and esthetically appealing. As always trust played a massive role in the end result. The clients could not have been kinder nor more supportive, they listened to my advice, supplied overwhelming enthusiasm and saw that the investment would absolutely be intelligent and worthwhile...both financially and emotionally. I believe the comments bear this testimony out. The fact that they would state how the garden makes them feel pride and happy to come home to is beyond any compensation I will ever make....indeed a rare and very fortunate opportunity for me and I am truly grateful to be considered for the part I contributed."

Larry was terrific from start to finish.  We needed several very large plants re-potted.  He came over to check things out, made several suggestions on what to do, where we could find the needed pots and suggested color/shape/size of pots which was very helpful.  We chose the pots with his help, paid for them, and  then he delivered the pots and re-potted the plants.  They look great!  He re-arranged/spaced other potted plants in our yard; he definitely has a professional eye for design.  We love the new look.
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"The clients were a pleasure to work for and very....very patient. Pots for people is like guessing random numbers they might like, so I have learned that having folks pick their own choice of shape and color (having been given given the dimensions required) is much simpler, more affordable, and far more successful all around. It still makes me smile when I see the excited look in people's eyes as they discuss how great the pots look, and I remind them they were a big reason the project was a success !! Thank you both for the work and the help in making this a fun project."

Larry was a real pleasure to deal with. He responded promptly to my calls and was very patient with a landscape novice. He made numerous suggestions which proved accurate (such as removing some bushes and replanting similar ones elsewhere). He was willing to accept my ideas but patiently explained why they would be inappropriate for my home. I told him that I was willing to spend more but he explained that for my home, it would not be right. His work was very neat, my wife and I are very happy with the work done and how the house looks.

Having lived in southeast Florida for almost 14 years, and having contracted with a least that many landscapers over the duration, I am SO pleased to be writing this review.  Based on past experience, I was beginning to wonder if there were ANY professional landscapers in southeast Florida who had a passion for their work and real knowledge within their chosen profession.   Without question, I have found that Earthworks Landscape has delivered on both of these attributes as well as many more!  In short, professionalism, communications, dependability, attention to detail as well as a thorough knowledge of horticulture and a true landscape design sense, Earthworks has delivered in ALL areas!

Plant variety and plant quality are key components of successful landscaping.  It was very refreshing to actually be surprised and excited to see the unique and unexpected planting options offered.  These were certainly NOT what is found at Home Depot!

I would also like to emphasize that I live in a zero-lot-line community, so landscape space was somewhat limited. Additionally, my initial purpose in contacting Earthworks was to replace the pump in an existing small pond-less water feature.  I was very impressed that Earthworks Landscape approached my job with the same enthusiasm as if it was equal to a full-scale landscape gig on Palm Beach Island!

I highly recommend Earthworks Landscape if you are ready to commit to a landscape experience that is not your typical southeast Florida experience!

Response from Earthworks Landscape
"As [Member Name] mentioned the space was small so scale of plant size was critical for the best effect of the work. What he isn't mentioning which is always a huge contribution to the overall success of any landscape is that he has great taste. Even though we didn't use a lot of flashy plants the combination worked with the existing plantings and he was open to my removing plants that were not. This ability to "see" what helps or hinders a garden is not an attribute all clients share and this is where TRUST plays such a big role. As always I am very grateful for this trust and will likely be returning from time to time to "tweak" the garden and keep it looking current and not over planted."

Whew I don't know where to begin, I guess at the beginning. I first talked to Larry well over a year ago. I knew immediately I wanted him from his write-up on Angie's list. I am a marketer by trade and I loved how he described himself. When you understand someone and connect with him on paper it's elementary after that. I had specific areas In my yard I wanted him to fix and Larry said he could address all those areas. He will tell you when something isn't working and TRUST him. There was never a time he was wrong. I don't know anything about plants, how they grow, work with other plants or their tolerance to the Floridian climate. Larry does. I didn't have to educate myself with him, he has that covered. He has transformed our yard. It's everything I couldn't imagine but wanted. When that happens it's magical. If you're looking for someone that is a color-by-number landscaper then look elsewhere. Your yard won't be transferred in a week, it's a process. During the process I got to spend time with a remarkable person. I got a glimpse into how Larry thinks. How he spends hours, probably days figuring out how the color, texture and tone of each plant is working in harmony with the other. If he plants something and it doesn't work, he takes it out and only replaces it with something your both happy with. Last but not least, Larry kept on working even when our budget was stretched beyond its limits. He did it because he loves what he does and your lawn is more than a job. It's his passion and he puts all of himself into it. He is a person I consider a dear friend and he also happens to be a spectacular landscaper and designer.
Response from Earthworks Landscape
"Remarkably the kindness of people can lift not only a persons spirit but their faith in what and why they do what we do. Very very few clients know exactly what they want but nearly all know what they don't. On this garden, having the benefit of working with someone who knows design and understands the creative process, I was fortunate on many levels. Good architectural features, an outstanding neighborhood with stunning street tree canopy throughout and clients that engaged with the design concept. I cannot begin to convey my gratitude and explain what a pleasure it was to work with such kind supportive folks, who allowed me the price ledge to "play" in their garden. From hanging their front drive lamp in the great Oak, to moving the mailbox and mounting an epiphytic ornamental in the trees to installing the crocus like "rainlillies" and other bulbs I was provided free range and given the review posted here I would consider the effort a success!! Thank you both...Larry"

I  contacted Larry Dieterich of Earthworks Landscaping regarding landscaping around my pool enclosure.  It was just so worn and tired looking. Larry responded and came out that day to give me an estimate.  Larry is extremely personable and sooooo knowledgeable of the south florida landscape and this passion shows in his work.  The usual mundane, boring plants for the typical south florida landscape are not part of his resume ?his landscaping skills are amazing as is his communication with emails and phone calls detailing the  projects (phases), costs  and staying within budget. As stated above, my project was broken down to three phases. PHASE ONE was the landscaping around the pool and east side of my yard with red cedars for privacy.  Unfortunately a couple of cedars didn't make it due to my watering abilities or lack thereof.  i live in the very western part of Palm Beach County and do not have in ground irrigation system. The cedars will be replaced by Larry during the "rainy" season.  Phase  TWO consisted of building the pergola. This is the part that was amazing.  I mentioned to Larry that I wanted to change the front look of my normal south florida "ranch" home typical of homes built in the late "80's but i didn't want the expense of building a front porch, portico etc.   He emailed  me photos of a few ideas he had.  One looked like the exact replica of my house.  I was SOLD!! He knew exactly what i was talking about? The pergola built is about 32 ft long and about 12 ft in height with (8) 8x8 posts, with crossbeams. The pergola was subcontracted to a carpenter with Larry's assistance and supervision.  I also want to mention that Larry along with his usual "guys" consist of himself and two workers. They, including Larry do all the work, digging, planting etc.  He definitely loves  "playing in the dirt"? PHASE THREE consisted of completing the landscaping to compliment the pergola in the front and side yards. Again, I told him what is pleasing in my visual thoughts. In the front side yard next to the driveway,  he  planted a Japanese fern tree, assorted lilies (love lilies) removed and replanted a couple of my  plants, one to hide the a/c unit, the crabgrass or weeds was replaced with sod and mulch. In the front yard, the grass was replaced  with sod.  Closer to the pergola, most of the  existing plants were removed and replanted. He added a few plants that were so unusual,  at least to me.  I especially loved the"poor man's orchids".  I don't remember the scientific name but they bloom at the end with bright orange flowers. It was my favorite!!! that and the rain lilies. Various other plants were used and completed with mulch. This area was  bordered with rocks that I had saved for several years to eventually reuse.  He created a spectacular complimentary vision to the pergola. An existing Roebellini palm tree  and a huge bougainvillea were removed  and replanted to the side yard.  On the other side of the front yard he placed plants around a palm tree and filled in the areas in front of the house with  assorted plants, mulch and pine needles to complete the look.  Larry knew I loved bougainvilleas and i had a few of them. He replanted most of them to other places in the yard where they had a better visual effect. He planted another type of vine for the pergola.  It is still in the early stages of growth and i know  it will be absolutely beautiful.  Im sure I'm forgetting the many plantings/other things that were done. I will say this, I gave Larry a blank canvas and he created a masterpiece!!!!! Words can't describe the beauty of his work, his fair and reasonable rates, and the ease of working with a person whose knowledge and expertise in the field of horticulture for the sub tropics by far is a credit to his profession.

Response from Earthworks Landscape
"this member is the star of the show, I only made practical but esthetic suggestions and she supported my ideas completely. I would like to add that she has no irrigation system so I am proud of her follow through with the initial hand watering of the new plantings. Now that the rains have started we just last week went back and did a quick maintenance including mulch and fertilizer and everything looked great...except where the 14 dogs dig and lay about!! Again, a great review due almost entirely to the trust of the client and good communication. !!"
