"David was genuinely nice and extremely professional. I am always hesitant when hiring someone because you want to be sure they are trustworthy and reliable. David was that and beyond. He was very helpful with all my questions. He put together my dining room furniture as well as my island stool chairs. Not only was he great at putting everything together, he offered some valuable advice and answered all my questions. I would hire David and his team anytime and will definitely refer him to my friends and family. It is so difficult to let someone in your home much less find someone reasonable. With David he is not going to nickel and dime you and honestly his prices were just right for my budget. I also would not refer someone to my family and friends without knowing for sure they were honest and reliable. Thank you I do not always write reviews unless someone is exceptional and David was. And if you are wondering. no, I was not paid to submit this review nor did I know David before I hired him so please consider my honest review based on how my experience was with the repairs he completed at my home."

Customers say: Quick response

"I hired Adam and his team to frame and install my new kitchen including framing out a new pantry in a very difficult space as well as install a slider and reconfigure some walls. I am so pleased with the result. His attention to detail and work ethic are a rare find. I would recommend anyone needing any carpentry, framing, windows and doors work to contact him, you will not be disappointed."

"Best contractor I have ever worked with! Usein was very communicative and extremely pleasant to work with. The work was completed exactly on time, and it turned out even better than we hoped! He was very flexible with us and explained things very clearly. He took such great care of our house while working on it, and treated it as if it were his own - which really helped us turn our house into a "home" when we moved in! Would highly recommend him and his team!"

"Very well, Damon and his nephew Jay were very meticulous with the work they did and cleaned up every day. They removed an old fiber glass tub/shower enclosure in our guest bathroom and installed a better tub and tiled the surround, replaced plumbing hardware. Downstairs they removed an ugly slate floor from our foyer and powder room and retiled with a lighter more modern look. I provided the materials."

"Helio and his crew were outstanding! This is the second time I’ve used his services. The first time was for installation of a new door. This time his team did a great job of painting a badly needed old office and a closet door and installing new light fixtures. Helio and his people were professional, courteous, efficient, and punctual. They were here every day, all day, until the job was done. I highly recommend HM Construction and painting!"

"Gene and the boys are amazing contractors and are our go to when there is work that needs to be done on our home. They remodeled our basement, and did a custom builtin to house our 180 gal fish tank. They removed a wall to make the basement more open space. Not only that but they did it cleanly, efficiently and in an amazing turn around time. They also more recently helped to fix our crown molding around our fridge in order for us to buy a bigger one and it looks exactly like the rest of our kitchen. We couldn't be happier with Your Way contractors and we will forever be repeat customers. Thank you Your Way! Also anyone who is looking to do work, I highly recommend the team."

"Max and his team of professionals completed the job well under budget, timely, and may I add looks gorgeous. 3 other contractors wanted nearly double the price but we are glad we with Max Construction. The job included removing a window and installing a sliding patio door, installing wainscoting in the dining and living room, and installing a brand new front door with sidelite (I did not have sidelights prior). I now have curb appeal and a gorgeous interior!!! If you want high quality carpentry and other remodeling done to your home without getting ripped off look no further than Max Construction.....he will make your dream home come to life!!!!"

"Great! Bill was super professional, detail oriented, and extremely responsive to our needs. He checked for our satisfaction and approval at every step of the process. He and his crew were completely responsible with being in our home when no one was here. They cleaned up after themselves each day. Bill went above and beyond by even installing the fixtures for us so we didn’t need to have the plumber back. The job required serious attention to detail (unforgiving subway tile in a 1926 bathroom) and boy is it precise. It was a small job, but he didn’t treat it like one. We’d hire Hilltop again in a heartbeat."

"John did outstanding job finishing basement in our house. He provided contract at the beginning of the project with the job descriptions and prizing. The prizing was reasonable. He strictly honors the contract. He worked personally with Livingston city authorities for job permit. John spent a lot of time with the city inspectors and completed all their recommendations. Work was done in very professional manner without any deficiencies. We are very happy! Definitely, recommend this company services to our relatives and friends"

"We were very happy with the service we received by Cary and his crew.  He beat every estimate we received and gave us quality work.  All the guys were nice and respectful.  Did paperwork for permits, worked fast, neat and was a perfectionist.  I would not hesitate to call Cary again to do work for us in the future.

Home Building FAQs, answered by experts

A construction manager is particularly useful in the case of a large-scale build with custom design elements, so it’s usually worth it to hire one. They can help manage your budget, maintain quality control, oversee timelines, and navigate unexpected hurdles. While construction managers are pricey, they can actually save money in the long run by identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring the project stays within budget.

Yes, a home builder or contractor should have the proper licensing and insurance. Licensing requirements vary by state and municipality, but most states mandate that a builder holds at least a general contractor’s license. For specialized work such as plumbing, electrical, roofing, or sewage systems, individual licenses may be required, in which case the builder may subcontract the work. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to review your local guidelines and confirm a builder's credentials. As you browse professionals, you can also look for the “Angi Certified” badge. This indicates the business meets our certification standards, which include passing a criminal background check, holding applicable state and local licenses, and maintaining an average rating of 3.0 or better.

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.

One of the best ways to negotiate with a homebuilder is to forgo price reductions. Instead, negotiate over upgrades and incentives, as many builders are more willing to go down that road than to decrease their own fee. Even if they were willing to take a cut, a reputable homebuilder often knows their worth, so a willingness to negotiate could be a red flag. Beyond that, builders are typically willing to negotiate closing costs instead of offering a discount on the base price.

On average, the cost of a home builder is about $150 per square foot, but that price can range from around $100 to $400 per square foot or more. That puts the typical price range of a standard, 2,000-square-foot house between $200,000 and $800,000. Some factors that affect the price of hiring a home builder include the following:

  • Location of your home and the living cost in the area

  • Type of foundation and framing you choose

  • Quality of the building materials

  • Footprint and layout of the house

  • Number of stories

  • Builder’s experience
