"We had a squeak in oak floor in hallway where work had been done six years ago. It was limited to area where doorway had been widened. Pryor Floor showed on time, assessed the situation and proceeded with repairs. Since basement below was unfinished, they had direct access to floor joists and sub-floor. They proceeded with base estimate actions (screws and glue), and it took two sets of screws to secure the oak flooring in that area to the sub-floor and joists. From their initial assessment to finish, done in 30 minutes. Pleasant workers who were respectful. Spouse is happy--best endorsement I can give!"

There could be several reasons why your carpet padding has adhered to the floor. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • There was intentional gluing or stapling to the surface.

  • The polyurethane and floor bonded over years of wear.

  • Pet urine, spills, or other substances leaked through the carpet and created a sticky surface.

If the carpeting in the home has not been changed in a long time, clearing off the padding underneath could be difficult. Pet urine can wreak havoc on carpeting and the flooring underneath. If you plan to reinstall carpeting, remember to use proper cleaning techniques for removing pet urine odors to prevent future problems.

Installing carpet over carpet may affect the warranty of the new carpet. Check with the manufacturer or retailer regarding their warranty policies. Many warranties stipulate specific installation guidelines, and installing carpet over carpet may not comply with these requirements. Voiding the warranty due to improper installation methods can leave you without help in case of issues or defects with the new carpet.

While it may not always be ideal, you can fix a squeaky floorboard without removing the carpet. Pros use specialized carpet screws and drive them through the carpet into the subfloor, securing floorboards. They may also use nails instead of screws if they suspect the pile will get caught in the screw. While some types of carpet will hide the screws and nails, a low-pile carpet may not.

It’s possible to reuse household materials to cover floors, but they won’t provide the same level of protection as dedicated materials. They’re also more difficult to tape down and more prone to slipping and bunching up—and any dirt or debris on them could scratch or stain your floors. That being said, extra materials like these can be useful for protecting the sides of furniture and placing in areas that could use added protection.

Technically, you can install carpet without padding. While skipping the padding can help you save on the project, it will make the carpet less comfortable and show uneven spots or imperfections in the subfloor. Because carpet padding protects the back of the carpet from wear, a carpet without padding can wear out faster than one with it. Carpet padding also cuts down on noise, so forgoing it can affect the acoustics in the room.
