"Although we did not end up hiring Scott and the Fortune Homes team, we regret every bit of that decision. Our basement remodel project ended up turning into a mess with another contractor we hired. As a last resort, I reached out to Scott hoping he could provide some guidance and support with the mess we had with the other contractor. He was incredibly receptive, supportive, and helpful in assisting us in making the best out of a bad situation with the other contractor. Scott was exceptionally generous with his time with us on a project he wasn't even working. That kind of integrity has him at the top of our list for any future projects."

"Kyle and his team at Southern Mesa LLC are the real deal. Great customer service, quick response times, reasonable prices, and they are high character people too. The best part is the quality of the end result. I’ve seen and worked with a lot of different contactors and teams. They are by far the best I’ve ever worked with or seen. This team is a one stop shop. They can do it all! And if they find something crazy on your property, Kyle has the contacts and humility to find the fix quick. I tell everyone I know about Southern Mesa LLC, and if you choose to hire them you won’t be disappointed. 10 out of 10 will be hiring again soon!"

"David demonstrated a level of professionalism that set him apart. He was responsive, knowledgeable, transparent, and genuinely cared about every detail. He happily answered questions and kept me informed every step of the way. The quality of work delivered on my basement exceeded my expectations. His craftsmanship, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence were clear. What was an unfinished space, transformed into a functional extension of our home that looks and feels like it was always meant to be there. What impressed me most was that David treated the project as if it were his own home. He took pride in his work, maintained a clean and organized job site, and made sure everything was completed to the highest standard. In an industry where reliability can sometimes be hard to find, David consistently delivered on his promises. Stop looking and call Mintz Construction. You'll get exceptional workmanship, honest communication, and a finished product you'll be proud of!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, in most cases, finishing a basement is worth the cost. The project adds valuable, usable square footage to your home and typically provides a return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 75%. For example, an average basement refinishing project costing $32,000 could add between $22,400 and $24,000 to your property's value. The final value added depends on factors like your location, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the features you include, such as a living space, bedroom, or bathroom. To be officially counted in your home's total square footage, the finished space must comply with all local building codes, including requirements for points of egress. However, in areas prone to flooding, a finished basement might be seen as a liability by potential buyers and could potentially decrease your home's value.

Yes, it is possible to turn a regular basement into a walkout basement. Doing so involves excavating the land around at least one side of your basement foundation, installing retaining walls to create a permanent below-grade area outside your home, and then cutting into the foundation to install an exterior door that leads out to the new space. This is an expensive and time-consuming project, but it can add a lot of value and utility to your home.

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.

Lifting a house and adding a basement is one way to add usable square footage. Lifting or jacking a house is a complex process, and it can be expensive, not to mention that you won’t be able to live in your house while it’s lifted, due to safety concerns. Lifting a house should only be done by experienced professionals.

Living in a finished basement is acceptable, but only if the space has the proper points of egress and includes smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure the safety of the occupants. A good way to ensure your finished basement is suitable for use as living space is to get the basement finishing project properly permitted.
