"M&N Stump Grinding and Small Tree Services is now OUR tree service people. We switched tree services because we were tired of replacing sprinkler heads, turf and cleaning up after theycleaned up. M&N was unbelievably good. It was amazing to have a service with such professionalism along with the quality of work. They did an amazing job of cleaning up afterward. Like I said, they are now our go to for all our trees. So thankful we went with them. Shout out to M&N - your good, very good!"

"Hernandez tree care service was great. Easy to communicate with during estimate process and very helpful in evaluting tree removal and trimming of others. Went above and beyond to cleanup yard from limbs and even removed the fallen leaves we had not cleaned up yet. Also acquired part & repaired a flower bed sprinkler line that incidentally got broken in the neighbor's yard. Will definitely use their services again. Appreciate their business integrity and pride in there work."

"I have lived in my current residence for 46 years. I have two 70-foot tall ash trees in my backyard. I have the trees pruned every 4-5 years. This was the finest tree pruning work I have received in all that time. The owner should be considered to be a "Tree Whisperer." He removed dead limbs and shaped the trees in a beautiful manner. I expressly requested that tree limbs that could pose a threat to power lines be removed. In the past, other companies promised that they would perform this service when they provided the estimate but then offered a litany of excuses why they couldn't do the work at the time of service. The owner of this firm completed all of the work he promised. I could not be more pleased. After 46 years, I have finally found a quality tree pruning company. You will find no better tree service in the Denver metropolitan area !!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

Any tree that needs to be pruned should be pruned to remove dead branches at least once a year. You may need to prune far more often if you’re trying to maintain a certain shape or to save a tree that suddenly becomes infected.

Generally, avoid trimming trees in the summer (with the exception of pruning fruit trees as needed). Trees use a lot of energy in the summer, most of which is relegated to new growth. If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

We recommend removing the stump, and grinding is a popular way to do it. You can also dig out small stumps or stumps that have fully decayed instead of grinding them. However, don’t try using acids or fire for killing a tree stump, which is a fire hazard and illegal in many areas.

Leaving the stump alone invites eventual problems, including attracting termites, mold, and fungi.
