"Dave was punctual and was very hardworking, making sure my new decking system was installed correctly. He took the time to install each layer of the decking system and made the finished surface graded so the water drained off perfectly. I would hire him again if I ever need to redo my deck."

"

Working with William and his crew was a real pleasure. His estimate for prepping and painting the exterior of my large single story stucco ranch style house was so good, I didn?t pursue other estimates.

William and his crew showed up as scheduled and started to work immediately.  His crew started moving things from the house perimeter to clear for working space while William rounded the house multiple times identifying and marking items requiring repair prior to painting (cracks and holes in stucco, missing stucco, mismatched and damaged fasciae boards, etc.) His team spread out and started the washing; trenching and masking processes as well as appropriately repairing all of the marked items. Almost all masking and painting took place in unusually hot and windy weather.

In addition to the planned painting William repaired and painted a leaking dormer that was not covered by the original estimate. He also painted a wrought iron gate and varnished the double entry doors.

My wife and I were so impressed with William?s work that we hired him immediately to paint a rental house for us. He also implemented a major repair and painted two pergolas.

Our expectations were exceeded for both quality and price.

"I needed exterior of my front two units of a triplex I own painted. They are craftsman bungalos with shingle siding and needed a lot of prep. I ended up deciding to do a 3-tone paint scheme, which required more work. James was very nice and responsive and ended up sending his big crew. I was a little skeptical at first, because his quote was considerably lower than other quotes I've gotten. However, he described a very thorough job, so I went with him. His crew was originally postponed because of another job, but when rescheduled his crew was a punctual, well-oiled machine. These guys didn't mess around. They were very careful about communicating with me throughout the job, so no mistakes were made and they checked with me to make sure I was satisfied before they left. When I inspected and pointed out things I wanted done they took care of everything without question. I am definitely calling Jim for my next job. Thank you Jim!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

You can refresh a painted deck by either giving it a thorough cleaning or refinishing the deck altogether. Chipped or faded paint, as well as extensive damage, often calls for a new finish. To do this, remove the original coat of paint with a sander and add either a new coat of paint or a stain to protect the wood below.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.
