"We worked with Ali (sales manager) and Tony (project manager), who took the time to design a project that made sense for our property and our budget, made a number of suggestions and recommendations and were never pushy or tried to "sell" us on something. The crew really went above and beyond to provide top quality workmanship and overall we were in very good hands. Highly recommended!"

"The painters were excellent workers.  They showed up on time and spent approximately 3 days from start to finish.  They did an excellent job of cleaning up the paint chips and droppings from a wood roof overhang that had not been painted for years.  All of their work was excellent.  Although not part of the bid, they even repaired a small problematic area near the roof and painted it.  If I need another painting project, this is the company I'm going to call."

"Beautiful work by true professionals! We chose the hottest week in the summer to paint, of course, yet Dave and Wes didn't flinch. We changed the color...after it had already been purchased...no problem! We decided on two colors, after Dave helped us decide what would look best.  Dave also honored a deal that ended before we began the job- what customer service! Dave and Wes were meticulous, professional and a joy to work with.  The house looks fantastic and they cleaned up afterwards too.  Wes even went out of his way to sweep the roof above the garage, as it was covered with tree seeds!  I would highly recommend them to anyone and hope to use DM Brown for any future projects.

"I can't express how thrilled we are with our new deck built by Expert Home Builders. From the initial consultation to the final touches, the team was nothing short of professional and attentive. They helped us design a deck that not only fits our backyard perfectly but also adds a significant value to our home. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and the materials used are top-notch. The team maintained clear communication throughout the project, addressing any questions we had promptly. The project was completed ahead of schedule, and they left the site spotless. I highly recommend Expert Home Builders to anyone considering a deck addition!"

"Bob Crowe, the owner, responded in person to our request for a bid on our patio roof. He was pleasant, thorough and had a contract in our hands in a very short time. He had three men working very hard for four days. They were all very courteous, worked non-stop in grueling heat, and cleaned up each day as well as at the end of the job. Bob himself stopped by to check on the work as it progressed. Best news of all is that it rained today and our patio is completely dry!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Opt for an interior wood stain that is rated for your type of wood. Consider your personal style preferences as well as the overall use of the room when choosing a color. Remember, the color you see at the store may look different on your actual floors once applied. This is why if you have the chance, it’s helpful to test a few options on a scrap piece of wood in the room first. Once you narrow it down, you can test a small patch on an inconspicuous area in the room to see it on the actual floors.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.
