"Luis and his crew did an amazing job. They worked for 3 days trimming hedges, bushes and vines. Removing bushes that were breaking a retaining wall. They trimmed our palm trees. They hauled away rusted patio furniture, wood, metal, and an old jacuzzi cover. Then they mowed, edged, and blew all the walkways and the patio. They were timely and courteous. I was so pleased with the work that I’ve hired them to do regular lawn service."

Customers say: Quality work

"Categories above don't exactly reflect the work we had done. Install It Direct removed our wood retaining wall and replaced with stone-look block (about 260 feet in length). They also installed artificial turf in our front yard, which greatly improved our curb appeal. Chris and Troy supervised these installations and their workers did an excellent job. We were very pleased with their work and it turned out great!"

"We interviewed many landscapers for our job. Steve was the most reliable by far in returning our calls and he was also positive about the plan and had no worries about being able to complete our complex project. We really like his crew, who has been with him for many years. We appreciated the updates he gave us and made sure there were no surprises. We had many things added: a water fountain, privacy screens, bbq pit updated, 4 veggie gardens and a retaining wall. wonderful experience. We love our landscaping. Thank you Steve."

"We love the work completed by the employees of San Diego Premier Outdoor. They did a fantastic job of paving all sides of our home, redoing a 30 year old backyard, and creating a cool oasis in which to enjoy outdoor living. Our dog thinks it was all done for her. (see photos) Emily listened to what we wanted redone, and with her creative design ideas, fashioned areas that were beyond our wildest expectations! We just keep walking around and smiling. Andy and his crew of expert craftsmen worked non stop. Neighbors came by daily to find out what was being done and all commented on the work ethic of the crew. Emily came to the site at least twice a day and kept in constant touch as to what was happening and what was to be done next. The paver and light installation that now surround our home, pet turf installation, pergola, and an old wall that needed to be stuccoed and capped were completed to perfection. This is an honest company that is reasonable priced, easy to work with, and strives to meet the customerâ  s wishes. They are reliable, on time, and deliver on their promises. Emily has a a high degree of integrity that is accompanied by a great sense of humor. We highly recommend San Diego Premier Outdo/Users/myralfluty/Desktop/IMG_1424.pdfor. /Users/myralfluty/Desktop/IMG_1421.pdf/Users/myralfluty/Desktop/IMG_1418.pdf Myra F."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.
