"L&J Exteriors and Remodeling replaced our tile roof, repaired and extended our back patio roof. We are extremely pleased with the services provided by L&J. Luis and Jacqueline were professional, courteous, maintained outstanding communication from day one until the final walk through, and adhered to the prices established in the contract. The crew arrived on time every day, was polite, and conducted a thorough clean up at the end of each day. Our roof looks fantastic! Thank you L&J! We highly recommend L&J Exteriors and Remodeling. "The company provided wonderful service from the first contact, estimate, removal of hail damaged roof, re-roof and follow-up inspection to ensure a proper completion. The workmen were very fast and fastidious, and their workmanship was very good. They were always courteous. Unlike contractors in other construction fields, the crews cleaned up after themselves daily. Neighbors with other roofing companies experienced prolonged project with questionable quality. We are very happy with their service. We would definitely hire them again."

"Kevin arrived at my home and conducted the estimate for my roof repair. He was and is very professional and knew exactly what was causing my roof to leak and explained in detail what had happened. Mike and his sons are the team that repairs the roof, they are professional, courteous and work like hell. I mean they work like there's no tomorrow. Not only do they do good work in repairing the roof, they pick up every shingle that has fallen to the lground around my property. Mike was to replace my swamp cooler and when he went to Lowes where I purchased the cooler from it was damaged. Mike negotiated a new upgraded swamp cooler for me at a lower price. He didn't have to do that, but that was how they take care of their customers. They are a great professional team that cares about their work and their customers."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Clay tile roofing is common for traditional villas, while flat roofs are more standard for modern villa homes. Clay tile roofs are long-lasting, require little maintenance, and are great for warmer climates. Flat roofs are usually low-cost, energy-efficient, and allow for rooftop gardens.

The proper specifications for furring strips can vary, so you should always consult the roofing manufacturer's guidelines or your roofer. However, general recommendations are as follows:

  • Thickness: Furring strips are typically 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick, meaning standard 1-by or 2-by lumber works well. In areas with extreme winds, a thinner strip may be preferred to limit how much air can get under the roof and cause uplift. A thicker strip can add slightly more insulation but will also increase installation costs.

  • Spacing: The recommended spacing for furring strips is between 12 and 24 inches apart on center. Proper spacing is crucial for ensuring good airflow, adequate drainage, noise reduction, and better energy efficiency. The ideal spacing can depend on the roof's pitch and the specific type of metal roofing being installed.

Sticky shoes help, but you shouldn't be walking on the steel roof— let the pros do that. it's dangerous enough to walk on asphalt shingled roofs which have quite a bit of texture. Stone coating adds a lot of grip, but it still doesn't lock your foot down, so if you absolutely have to be on the roof, make sure you’re secured in another way, like with the harness and rope.

Yes, but it won't be as effective as installing it as part of a new roof because it won't be as water-resistant. However, a drip edge installed after the fact is better than no drip edge at all.

In most cases and locations, roofs with a single layer of asphalt roofing shingles won't require roof removal before installing a metal roof. However, underlayment may be necessary on roofs with moderate shingle damage. Heavily damaged roofs or ones with multiple shingle layers will most likely require removal before a metal roof can go on.
