"Joe Kelley is a wonderful designer. He also listened to my input. The crew were hard-working and polite. They cleaned up each day before they left. Joeâ s son, Ethan, was the project manager. He stayed in close touch with me and responded to my questions immediately. Joe came by when the project was done to make certain I was familiar with the watering schedule. The price was VERY fair and nothing was added from the estimate. I absolutely LOVE the results! Neighbors slow as they drive by to admire the changes. I would not hesitate to recommend this company!"

"Excellent. Matthew knows his stuff. No short cuts as he walked the project and drew up the plan. The crew was as hard working as I've seen in a lot time. I just had the house built so I've seen plenty of contractors and craftsmen in the last year. His guys were top notch. Communication was excellent as well. Response time kept everyone informed and on time. I would not hesitate to recommend Balance Landscaping. Joe"

"They designed my ambulatory surgery center more than 20 years ago and about seven years ago designed an addition to the center beside designing a medical clinic for Adobe gastroenterology and Adobe surgery center that I own. They also designed pathology lab. I highly recommend this firm. Theyâ re extremely competent and very responsive. I also have them design several scenarios for residential home."

Architects questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you should hire a draftsperson for simpler projects like minor home renovations, and you should hire an architect for new construction, structural changes to your home, and large home add-ons. If you’re working on a larger project that demands an architect or structural engineer, your professional will often have a draftsperson on staff and include their services in your estimate.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

As with most large-scale home renovation projects, you’ll need an architect to map out the exact layout and specs of your above-garage room, which is required in many municipalities. Some general contractors will serve as your architect, or they may bring on a residential architect to assist with the plans.

The most common scale for residential blueprints is 1/4 of an inch equals one foot. This scale is the most popular because it’s easier for everyone involved, from professionals to homeowners, to understand the building’s actual dimensions. Also, it allows blueprints to have the necessary details without cluttering the page.

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.
