"We hired Kelvin to install some ceiling fans. He was pleasant, skilled, and efficient. We were so pleased with his work that we have used him for several additional electrical projects. Each time he provided estimates, completed the work on a timely basis and we were extremely pleased with the results. He is experienced, knowledgeable, and very pleasant to work with. "They replaced a ceiling fan for me. The work was fine. I don't know why I had to have an assessment of my entire electrical system as well, but I got it."

"We called on Retro Electric for an issue we were having with a kitchen outlet. They were great at communicating and Ryan arrived on time, was very professional, knowledgeable and able to make repairâ s quickly. We have since had Ryan return to do additional electrical work adding ceiling lights and a separate outlet for our microwave. We e are very happy with his services and that we have finally found a solid company to call on for all our electrical needs. We highly recommend Retro Electric!!"

"They were great and very professional. In and out for a bathroom vent fan repair in under 30 minutes. However, that small job was $454 and they also tried to upsell me on replacing all of my breakers on my electrical panel ($2,576) as well as add a whole home surge protector ($918). Feels a bit excessive to push over $3,000 of work for what was started as a small job."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

There are many types of ceiling fans available, each designed for different spaces and needs. Standard ceiling fans are the most common type and work well in most rooms. Low-profile ceiling fans are better suited for rooms with low ceilings. Smart ceiling fans can be controlled with a smartphone or voice commands. For larger spaces with ceilings between 10 and 25 feet high, large ceiling fans are ideal. Dual-motor fans have two motors to produce more airflow in multiple directions. You can also find energy-efficient or Energy-Star models that can be up to 60% more efficient, as well as fans with built-in lights or retractable blades.

The number of blades for your fan poses both advantages and disadvantages. Typically, the more blades on a fan, the better the air distribution and cooling effect, but this also means that your fan will have more wear on its motor. For small rooms, three-blade fans should work fine. For larger areas like living rooms, four or five-blade fans might be the better option.

There are several telltale signs to let you know that your ceiling fan needs servicing or replacement. For instance, if it’s wobbling, rotating too slowly, or if your ceiling fan is making noise such as squeaks, buzzes, and thumps, it’s time to have it looked at by a professional. Not only may it indicate a potential problem with the fan itself, but it could also signal a red flag that it’s improperly assembled or there’s an issue with the wiring.

Yes, ceiling fans come with a few other features that help with function, style, and convenience. Multi-speed fans can give you specialized control over the airflow. Consider getting one with an integrated light to save ceiling space. Some ceiling fans come with a remote control that enables you to change direction without climbing a ladder. Of course, you can also consider installing a wall switch to enjoy that convenience.

Since the cost of installing a ceiling fan is $250 for most homeowners, it might be beneficial to replace your existing fan if you are experiencing a significant repair issue, like a broken motor. However, for less expensive repairs, like a fan blade replacement, you’ll likely spend less on the repair than a complete fan replacement. Of course, if you’re looking for an upgrade or a new style fan, replacing it altogether is always an option.
