The right psi for your well pressure tank depends on the tank’s pressure settings. For instance, if yours is set to 30/50 psi (which is common), the ideal psi is 2 to 3 psi below the cut-on pressure—in other words, 27 to 28 psi. However, if it’s at a higher setting of 40/60 psi, 38 psi would be the appropriate level.

There are a couple of ways you can determine the depth of your well. One method is to use a device called a well sounder. This tool has a long measuring tape containing a sensor to alert you once the end reaches the water. 

Or you can DIY it by using a long tape measure with a half-filled bottle of water attached to it. Lower the tape measure into your well. Once you feel tension on the tape, you’ll know the bottle has reached your static water level. This will give you an approximate idea of your well’s depth.

Your septic tank may be full or clogged if you notice household drains that are backed up, draining slowly, or gurgling; greener, lusher grass around the septic system; pooling water in your yard; or smelling sewage odors outdoors. There are a few signs you can look out for to determine if your well pump needs to be repaired or replaced, including the following:

  • Your water pressure fluctuates.

  • You lose water entirely on occasion.

  • You notice the pump making unusual noises.

  • Water sputters out of your fixtures.

  • Your utility bills suddenly spike without explanation.

  • You notice sediment or cloudiness in your water.

  • You hear that the pump runs continuously.
