"Cathleen was extremely thorough and performed some tasks we did not even anticipate. For example, when we were sorting through a box to decide what to do with each item, we came upon a phone battery. She realized that it was misshapen, which meant it was extremely dangerous. She put it in my Hot Pot because that would seal it and took it to Best Buy, so they could dispose of it safely. She cleaned up after each of the tasks and disposed of trash in the dumpster. Her fees were very reasonable. She let me know that if anything needed further attention, I could contact her."

"

Alaska Foundation overcharged us but they were willing to do the work. They have the right equipment for the job and they were pretty good at responding back. I might not use them in the future.

Excavating questions, answered by experts

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help.

Preparation involves site assessment, clearing debris, grading surfaces, and compacting soil to support stable construction.
