"I was in a sticky situation. My contractor was unprofessional and was overcharging. John stepped in and worked out a reasonable price. His worker Aaron was respectful and lovely to deal with. To install an outlet from existing wiring, you’ll need to choose a location where you can already access existing wiring. The easiest way to do this is to install an outlet on the other side of the wall of an existing outlet. 

Since the wiring is already in place, all you have to do is connect a new cable to the existing wiring and then connect the correct wires through the wall—to the new electrical outlet. Place your new outlet into the opening in the wall and then connect the correct wires to the appropriate terminal screws.

If a 3-way switch is wired incorrectly, this can cause several issues. The most common problem is that the switches will not function properly: Either both switches won’t work, or only one will. Another issue is that one switch will trigger a short circuit, tripping the circuit breaker.

A sump pump can be plugged into a regular, 110-volt outlet with three-prong openings, but it must have GFCI protections per the NEC, meaning you’ll need a GFCI outlet and circuit. Sump pumps require two outlet openings, one for the plug to the motor and one for the float switch.

People who have experienced blown fuse have occasionally tried to fix the problem by placing copper pennies in the fuse box. While they are good conductors of electricity and can seemingly “fix” the issue,  they don’t protect against short circuits or fires. Putting pennies in a fuse box is dangerous—the best solution is to call a professional electrician to fix the problem.

To power the system down, simply turn it off and cut it off from its electricity. That means removing the transformer from the wall plug and taking out the battery that usually sits within the control panel itself. That will disconnect it from power and essentially reset the entire alarm system.
