Electrical questions, answered by experts

An AC disconnect, also known as a switch box or fuse box, is a safety switch that allows the AC’s electrical supply to be turned off from the outside, usually done by a mechanical contractor coming to work on your unit. The box is protected from the weather by a cover or may be designed as a pull-out unit. Your local code determines where the AC disconnect must be mounted, but it's usually close to your outdoor AC unit.

Yes, overheating outlets can cause fires, even if nothing is plugged in at the time. If your outlet is too hot, turn off the circuit breaker, unplug everything, and let it cool down before troubleshooting the issue. Fortunately, outlet fires are rare, but if a fire starts, suppress it with a Class C fire extinguisher or baking soda—or leave the area immediately and call the fire department.

The safest option is to let a technician conduct the inspection. However, if you are certain that the capacitor failed and you take all precautions to avoid electric shock, you can take a look yourself. Usually, you can open the front panel of the unit and use a flashlight to find the small capacitor cylinder. It should have a sticker on it that provides its product number, capacity, and similar information that you can note when talking to a contractor.

A new circuit breaker costs anywhere between $10 and $100 on average, depending on the type of circuit breaker. A standard circuit breaker is the most affordable, while a GFCI or AFCI circuit breaker will cost the most. If you’re upgrading to a higher amperage, anticipate paying closer to $250 to $350 for a 200-amp circuit breaker.

Yes, a water leak poses a major fire risk at your home because water is a conductor of electricity. Water that comes into contact with sparks or electrical wires can instantly ignite flammable materials. Additionally, any type of exposure to water can cause wires and other electrical components within your home to corrode. When assessing categories of water damage, it's important to know that even a small amount of moisture near wiring could cause sparks that lead to a fire.
