Electrical questions, answered by experts

The number of outlets you can run off one wire depends on the circuit's amperage and your local electrical codes. Generally, you can have up to eight outlets or light fixtures on a single 15-amp circuit. For a 20-amp circuit, you might accommodate more, but ensuring the total load is within the circuit's capacity is crucial. Always consider the power usage of connected devices to prevent overloading. Consult local electrical codes or a licensed electrician for precise guidelines and safety.

No, there aren’t additional code requirements for kitchen lights. Kitchen lights and other electrical circuits in the kitchen have different code requirements. Outlets need to be particularly robust because of their frequency of use and proximity to liquids. If you need help determining where to install outlets in your kitchen, consult a local electrician who can ensure that placement is functional and up to code.

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, a standard safety addition to home power outlets. In rooms where moisture is more likely, like the bathroom and kitchen, GFCI outlets stop the current when certain kinds of shorts are detected, preventing shocks. Both GFCI and the similar AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are polarized and have clear indicators on the receptacle where hot wiring should go.

Electrical meter risers connect your home’s electrical meter to overhead power lines so you can receive electrical service from the grid. Electrical meters also have a weatherhead, which protects the utility lines connected to your home’s electrical system via the service entrance cable. Risers connect the weatherhead to your electrical meter socket, which connects to the meter.

Yes, hot outlets can cause a fire. When an outlet becomes hot, it means there’s an electrical problem, such as an overloaded circuit, loose connections, or a faulty component. The heat generated by these issues can cause the outlet to catch fire, especially if it’s near flammable materials such as curtains, furniture, or paper. If you notice that an outlet is hot to the touch, turn off the power to the circuit, unplug any devices connected to it, and consult a qualified electrician for next steps.
