Customers say: Quality work

"Owner Jerry Boyd was professional, timely, and meticulous in his work. Jerry was open about the process of the bathroom remodel from start to finish. Especially like that he will not install â cheapâ items. Everything done to our liking. Highly recommend Jerry!"

"First, and most important, don't take my "B" grades as bad grades. I'm fussy. The bottom line is, I would have Spartan back to do future work. We had work (two bathroom remodels) done late summer 2018 - as I write it is May 2019 and not a day goes by when my wife and I aren't pleased with our "new" bathrooms. I'd call Spartans "caring craftsmen." There work is beautiful. Mike was always available to discuss the progress of the project. Not surprising there were changes mid-project -- some upgrades, some cutbacks. The upgrades were well worth it. A couple of things I'd like better: the project lasted 10 weeks, I'm told that's not outrageous but I wish it was 8 weeks. Previous walls were wallpaper and I wanted to pull all wallboard off down to the studs. Spartan thought that was an unnecessary expense. But, as it turns out, the wallpaper wouldn't come off and we had to go down to the studs and it cost two (maybe three) days of trying. On the plus side - the new shower looks fabulous; the ceramic tile (full bath) and ceramic floors were masterfully done; and the wood working to install new vanities and cabinet doors were done with great attention to detail. And Spartan brought in excellent plumbers and electricians. Do be discouraged by my "B" grade - I wish the job could have gone faster and the final bill was a tad lower, but maybe I'm being unrealistic. I wasn't gouged and the rooms look great!"

"Mark was fabulous. We live in a very old & uneven house. There were a couple issues that arose during the installation that caused the job to run into two days. Mark set the door so that we were secure overnight returning the next day to complete the installation. We were not expecting the install to look as nice as it does (again: very old & uneven home). We are very happy & excited to have a functioning door. Thank you Croixside & your employee Mark. Project was started 5-4-21 and completed 5-5-21."

"As an old retired guy reading the morning paper every day at my kitchen table next to a porch window, I had the privilege of watching poetry in motion!  I probably saw 90% of all the saw-cuts and screws driven!  I'm sure I probably drove Dex and Carl nuts, though!  Every move was well thought out for maximum efficiency!  Unless you've done a project like this before and have all the right tools, there is no way you could end up with the same beautifully finished product Dex and Carl produced!  They really know what they're doing.  Watching Dex create the step stringers for two stairways was a work of art.  Unless you know what you're doing, you'll just end up with a pile of firewood.  Likewise, until you watch someone cut and assemble an aluminum railing system, you can't really appreciate how difficult and time consuming it is.  Carl worked many hours tweaking and cutting the Westbury Aluminum Railing components until they fit just right.  It takes a lot of patience and skill.  In addition, the new window, door and AZEK Decking were installed with the same skill and care.  They did a wonderful job!  Dex and Carl removed the cedar siding from the porch and prepared it for the new steel siding, but doing the actual siding was sub-contracted out.  They did a good job, too.
I originally wanted a bid from them because I liked their "Bio":  Two local family guys doing what they love to do.  That was Mike and Dex.  Since then, Carl has joined them.  Their livelihood greatly depends on word of mouth from satisfied customers.  So on that account, I would highly recommend Craftsman Renovations for any of your renovation projects.  They are very professional in their dealings and are easy to work with.  They are willing to make the details of their contracts as specific as you want so there are no surprises at the end.  They will try to do whatever you want, but you do have to make sure you understand everything because they can't read your mind.  We must have gone through five or six versions of the contract until I was satisfied.  The price was in the ball park of the other two estimates I received, but it wasn't the cheapest.  But, I'm sure the others would not have put up with all my questions like they did.  Once the work was scheduled and started, it was completed in a timely manner (in time for my daughter's wedding).  So, if you can't tell, I highly recommend Craftsman Renovations!

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

To make a bathroom look bigger, choose light-colored, medium- to large-format tiles. Light colors such as white, cream, or light gray make a space feel more open, while dark colors, busy patterns, and small tiles can make a bathroom feel smaller. It may seem counterintuitive, but small tiles can shrink a room visually due to the increased number of grout lines. Using medium- to large-format tiles creates a more seamless look. For the best effect, pair your light-colored tiles with a matching or similarly colored grout. This minimizes the grid-like pattern and gives the floor and walls a more continuous, uninterrupted appearance, helping the room feel significantly larger.

The tile trim you use will depend on a few factors, including design preferences, budget, and whether the project is DIY or not. You might choose plastic trim if you want an easier DIY job that is more budget-friendly. There are also more color options available in plastic. On the other hand, you might choose metal to match your fixtures or for areas with heavy use.

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.

For glass tile, you want to use unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a stronger and grittier cement grout that is great for installing tiles with wider gaps and into joints. However, it is susceptible to scratching glass tile and is more difficult to use in thinner gaps. Unsanded grout, while more expensive, is easier to fit between thin gaps and is less harsh on delicate materials, like glass tile.

Yes, it would be best if you waterproofed your shower walls before tiling. The cement backing board behind the tile is not waterproof; it’s only water-resistant. On top of your tile backing board, be sure to use a waterproof shower membrane before you start installing your shower tiles.
