"Efrain responded quickly, showed up when he said he would, explained how he would fix the retaining wall (including adding drainage so no future problems arose) and was very communicative. He completed the job when he said he would and it looks wonderful. I would wholeheartedly recommend him based on my experience. Rarely do I find it enjoyable to work with someone on home repair, but he was excellent!"

"The guys did a great job. Very punctual and polite. Very reasonable price. Our kitchen is FAR from being show quality, they didn't flinch and their genuine efforts show in the paint. I personally saw the hours and hours of elbow grease that went into taking our old wallpaper off, not a single damage to the walls. Others have tried taking off our wallpaper with different methods, and never turned out as good as this.Quality work hands down. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again."

"It went very well. They were efficient and came prepared to complete the work we needed done. We love our new fan...its so quiet and does a great job removing the moisture out of the air. The toilet they fixed was an after thought but they ran and got the needed parts and fixed it right away. Im thankful your site lead us to H&S! I will be calling them again when we need help with a repair."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Roberto and his team did a great job on our project. They were professional, hard working, and friendly. The quote Roberto provided for two retaining walls was very competitive and he provided it quickly. They began work within a few days of accepting the quote and completed it promptly. We would use him again and already recommended him to neighbors who have come by to check out the new walls. Great job!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Even if you think you know how to build a retaining wall theoretically, doing the actual work is a completely different story. There are lots of nuances in building retaining walls, and the slightest oversight can compromise their integrity. Therefore, we recommend you hire a pro to build, repair, or replace retaining walls.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.
