"We had half our windows and two sliding doors replaced in 2014 and the other half of the windows and remaining family room sliding door replaced in 2018. Overall the windows are top notch. Our family room screen door seems ill-fitting for some reason. Windows are made in Wisconsin and are expensive but worth it."

"Our doors were done ahead of schedule, and we received frequent emails regarding the progress of our product. Our service tech was the best. They don't come much better than Ben. He was thorough, kind, respectful and he cleaned up after himself well. On day one he had his trailer parked in our driveway, so my car sat on the street. We had less than satisfactory weather with sleet falling a large portion of the day. Ben scraped my car windows before he left for the day! He explained how things worked and made sure all of our questions were answered before he left. The doors are beautiful and we can't say enough about the entire process from start to finish. We recommend Weather Tight to everyone looking for new doors, windows, etc."

Small jobs welcome

"John is a very capable home/business services professional. He helped us with a variety of things from fixing sliding door weatherproofing and various seals around the house. Things that other people had told us require total replacement instead of repair. He helped us with window shades. Outdoor refinishing of window sills, and other home repair items. He has wide range of expertise and got the job done for us. We will work with him again and recommend him to others."

"Got a contact call from Victoria initially. Her award winning personality was a huge first step. Alec came and measured and presented options and demonstrated the top of the line window. Rick followed up with a final measuring. Then Megan stepped in and was the liaison between me and the factory. She offered me options on the bay window for my living room. She kept in touch as to production schedule and the subsequent installation schedule. Their crew came out while I was away and did a thorough and clean job. Never would have known someone had been in my house in my absence. Give them a ring for your window needs. You will be well served!"

"There are many good things to say about Empire Home Remodeling. To begin the process, we selected three local window vendors. All three came to our house to explain their product line. We don't buy solely on price. Empire had the most professional presentation of the three we considered and we felt no high pressure from the sales rep. Price wise they offered the best product of the vendors at what we felt was a fair price. We were able to purchase triple pane glass for the same price the others were offering for double pane, glass, plus some additional benefits. Windows came with a lifetime transferable warranty. This can be a benefit when selling ones property. We felt confident that the measurements were accurate as they double checked before placing the window order. They were willing to work to our schedule as we had some major issues confronting us when it came time for the install. When it came time for installation the installer was very concerned that things were done right. He was very neat and left our premises in great shape. We feel we made the right decision because if we had a question of any type Empires owner, Melissa, dealt with it herself. We did not have to deal with a list of people in order to get an answer. We felt this to be very reassuring. In addition, Melissa, visited our house several times during the install of the windows to see if all was going well. Overall, Empire Home Remodeling is a company I would highly recommend. R Karel/New Berlin"

Window Door Contractors questions, answered by experts

There are different types of screen materials available when purchasing a screen door, but the two main options are fiberglass and aluminum. Fiberglass is lightweight and affordable, but can stretch out, so it needs to be replaced more often. Aluminum has a higher upfront cost, but is more sturdy. Aluminum can be more difficult to install, even if you know how to replace screen door mesh.

Window screens can help keep some heat out of your home, which is one benefit of using them in summer. It’s also the reason experts suggest removing your screens in winter—so it’s easier for the sun’s warmth to filter into your home. This will keep you cozier and potentially reduce your heating bills.

No, it’s not safe to leave a doggy door open. It might be more convenient, especially at night when you just want to lay in bed. However, when you leave it open, it increases the chance of other critters getting in without your knowledge. Also, it leaves your pup unsupervised for hours at a time.

Many windows carry warranties from the manufacturer or installer that may cover the cost of repairs for a fixed amount of time. When installing or replacing windows, ask about any applicable warranties, what kinds of damage and repair they may cover, and what the procedure is for making a warranty claim.

Window screen repair costs an average of $310, with a typical range of $100 to $480. The final price depends on several factors, including the window size, accessibility, screen type, whether the frame needs replacement, and especially the screen material.

The cost of window screen materials varies widely based on durability and features:

  • Fiberglass: $35–$200

  • Aluminum: $50–$300

  • Copper: $90–$850

  • Stainless Steel: $45–$400

  • Brass: $100–$900

  • Solar: $55–$850

  • Security: $100–$1,000

  • Vinyl: $25–$120

Costs also differ by screen type. For instance, a prefabricated screen might cost only $40, moveable screens typically run $25 to $75, and retractable screens range from $300 to $900. To save money, you can choose more affordable materials like vinyl or fiberglass, opt to rescreen instead of replacing the entire frame, and have multiple screens repaired at once to reduce labor costs.
