"I met with Larry to get a quote on some major drywall repairs and minor construction at my house. I could tell right off the bat that Larry was a great contractor and consummate professional, with a love for what he does and an intimate depth and knowledge of the field. For instance, he was able to identify a variety of creative (and practical) solutions to fixing up our office ceiling, which was a rather "atypical" having been constructed out of a mix-and-match set of materials; he came up with at least 3 ways we could cover our hallway where a water heater stuck out like an eye sore. He was flexible, timely, and to be honest I just really liked him. Unfortunately, in talking it over with my wife we realized we needed to move in bursts really fast to minimize disruptions and this necessitated working with contractors that operate in a crew. If we had the flexibility, Larry probably would have been our top choice because I could tell that he would have taken the time and precision to make everything perfect."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Jack and his crew are fantastic. They’ve remodeled, painted and maintained multiple elements of our home’s interior and exterior, including installation of numerous custom lighting fixtures, cabinetry, roofing detail and deck installation and maintenance. I love that he’s independent and thoroughly human, and just a super sweet guy as well as a highly skilled pro. I’ve also seen his work at other people’s houses including beautiful stonework and full home restoration. I’m honestly not sure what Jack and company can’t do!"

Customers say: Quick response

"I hired Domenic to replace the “cheek walls” beside the front steps on my 1923 house. The originals had been removed at some point and replaced by two arborvitae trees. Domenic did an exceptional job. His work was meticulous and the job turned out just like we had hoped. The house now looks like a picture we have taken in 1939. If you need masonary or concrete contact Domenic. Great work and reasonably priced. Thanks for a job well done"

"This was the absolute best experience with a contractor I have had in the seven years years of owning my my home here in Kenmore. Thomas was not only knowledgeable but conscious of what my choices were and was willing to offer fixes that were not the most expensive but the most effective. His crew was right on time worked diligently all day and cleaned up before they left. I only wish there business did more things I would hire them in a second. I would absolutely recommend this company. Thanks you !!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

There are contractors specifically trained in the design and construction of retaining walls. Retaining wall contractors are skilled at dealing with the soil on your property and assessing what kind of drainage should be installed. They will recommend the best materials to use for the project and can handle the processing of permits by local authorities.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.
