Customers say: Quick response

"The team at Black Horse Masonry do excellent work. Every aspect of the job, from getting the quote, demolition and rebuilding of my chimney went without any issues (except Tacoma weather) Tara at the front office did a great job keeping me in the loop on the status of the job as we faced many rain delays. Would highly recommend."

"The Bricks Doctor came out and tuck pointed the outside of my house and chimney within 7 days. They had to replace a few bricks and did it at no cost. I have a big house so I was amazed with their timeline. They did an amazing job on my 8 ft high chimney. Their crew of 4 people finished the job with precision."

"Outstanding company. Not cheap but they are totally worth it. They did beautiful winding path in our front yard 4/2019 and just completed a 70 foot long path and stairs in our back yard. Manuel was the lead guy and Holly was the sales lady. Their customer service is the best that I've encountered. They are very keen on pleasing the customer. Manuel obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. Once they start working they come every day M-F and work hard for about 8 hours. No annoying long pauses while they start another project. "John was terrific in all respects. He came out the first day to give me an estimate. He brought his crew out the next day to start the demo and prep work. After a short delay due to poor weather and a difficulty in obtaining concrete, he completed the job on the third day. The price was reasonable and the quality of work was top notch! John kept me informed at every step of the work and answered all my questions. I highly recommend him for any concrete needs you may have."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Initially, brick staining is not cheaper than painting. However, while it has a higher up-front cost, it may be more cost-effective in the long run. Brick stain can last for 20 years or longer, compared to paint, which usually starts to peel away in three to five years.

This is largely dependent on the size and hardness of the rock, but a range of tools might work, including hammers, chisels, rock hammers, sledge hammers, and more. You'll need a jackhammer for the very biggest rock-breaking jobs.

Stone houses used to be much more practical, but with the advent of stronger and cheaper materials like concrete, they aren’t seen as much anymore. There are some parts of the world where it makes sense to build with stone, and they are usually next to a stone quarry. Stone is, however, very weather-resistant, which is why many homes near the sea and on mountains are still built with local stone.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.
