"Outstanding owner and operator of this concrete business. Rome excavated, installed rock, and finished the concrete for a pickleball court, shed pad, and extension to my driveway. Everything was done perfectly and on time. Exceptionally pleased with the work, workmanship, and the people he hired to complete a multi concrete and excavation project. So very thankful he called during my initial call for help. Excellent job and Rome leaves this project with a lifetime friend in me."

"Holly, Manuel and the crew were very professional, methodical and detail oriented. They provided great communication during planning, execution and post project work. We were given detailed information on the options of material and their recommendation for our need. The crew worked hard despite challenging weather of rain and snow. We had some scope changes and yet they're able to take them in stride, did the additional work with the same level of professionalism and completed the project on time. The retaining wall and fence border property lines and our neighbors were also impressed with the quality of their work. We highly recommend them."

Customers say: True professional

"We needed a short retaining wall and, based previous ratings and estimate, we hired Magical Forest General Contractor & Landscaping LLC to do the work. Not only did they do an excellent job, they gave me a great suggestion for installing stone stairs. He did an awesome job with that as well! We will definitely hire Ricardo and his team again for our landscaping needs."

"John was terrific in all respects. He came out the first day to give me an estimate. He brought his crew out the next day to start the demo and prep work. After a short delay due to poor weather and a difficulty in obtaining concrete, he completed the job on the third day. The price was reasonable and the quality of work was top notch! John kept me informed at every step of the work and answered all my questions. I highly recommend him for any concrete needs you may have."

"STA-Built did an awesome job installer concrete pavers in an area where we put our garbage cans. They were right on time - finished my project in 1 day. The follow-up with Leland (who came out to give the quote in the first place) was there on the day of install and stopped by to follow up that day after they had finished the work. I honestly can't think of one thing that would lower the rating of 5 stars."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

If you’re attempting to mix and pour your own mortar, expect to pay between $5 to $10 for an 80-pound bag of mix. The cost to repair mortar, however, can range from $300 to $500 for a 20-square-foot wall. The larger the area and the more extensive the repair, the higher the cost.

No, you don’t need to soak the brick before cutting it by hand. In fact, cutting a wet brick can make it harder to see your score lines and may cause the chisel to slip. Soaking is sometimes used with power tools to reduce dust, but for hand-cutting, it’s best to work with dry bricks for better control and visibility.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.
