"Jack’s Evergreen Painting is a first class organization and I highly recommend them! They removed wallpaper, sanded walls, primed, and painted two coats of paint in one bedroom. Then they painted another bedroom. They were quick, neat, accurate, and reasonably priced. What a pleasure to hire such a first class company. I was so satisfied that I have hired them to stain my house this summer."

"My original review is below.  I am updating the review for two reasons.  The first is that after the winter when my husband and I were opening windows, we found they all had been securely painted shut.  Several were so bad my husband had to go outside with an xacto knife to break through the paint.  His father was a painter and my husband said his father would have yelled at him if he had ever done that.

The second reason is the deplorable shape our deck is in.  We had difficulties at the time with pointing out to Clinton that the deck had not been thoroughly pressure washed.  He finally went and got the pressure washer and re-did the parts of the deck I was unhappy with so I let it go how much I disliked having to argue with him about it even though there were clearly spots that were not very clean.  My current problem is with the sealant he put on the deck.  We have always used clear sealants and never had a problem in the past.  But after the winter the deck looks as though it had never been cleaned or sealed.

When I called Clinton to tell him, his first response was to say he had done the job he was hired to do and that was that.  The next day I received a conciliatory email offering to work things out.  But when I called to say I wanted him to pay back the cost of the deck or to redo it he said no, he had done all he could and gone "over and above" (as if he were not paid properly for the work.)  He never counter-offered any kind of a solution.  I do know that with Thompson's water sealant we have used in the past which was properly applied we could get through two winters with no problem.  I will add photos as soon as I figure out how to do that.

My original review follows:

Clinton and the crew were here every day for over a week.  When the trim color was not quite right, Clinton went back to the store and ultimately went to a different paint store to get an exact match.  One of the boards in our steps needed replacement and again Clinton had to go to several lumber outlets to get an exact match to our other steps.
The crew spent extra time removing sealant that had been applied to every seam in our deck railings by the last contractor.  They sanded the railing and replaced a warped board before painting.  When I was not happy with the initial pressure wash on the deck, Clinton re-did it.  The job took three extra days to complete, mostly because of the deck railings and I was fine with that because I wanted the job done right.
No one played obnoxiously loud music.
The results are good.  The 30 year old house looks new and the shrubs near the house have no damage."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

It’s necessary for paint to completely dry before exposure to rain, and that drying time varies by the type of paint used. Oil-based paint takes 6 to 8 hours to dry on average, meaning that’s the minimum time needed between the last brush stroke and the first raindrop. Latex paint dries faster at around 1 hour, and acrylic paint is even quicker, usually drying in about 30 minutes. If rain is in the forecast, check the paint manufacturer's details before laying on a new coat.

Ipe wood can last up to 75 years with minimal maintenance because its own oils help to preserve it. However, to get the most out of your Ipe wood deck, you should perform some routine maintenance, including regular cleaning, sweeping of leaves and debris, and rinsing spills with a hose. It’s also important to repair any deep scratches as soon as you spot them and reseal the deck annually to protect against scratches and scuffs.

If you want to achieve a deeper, darker stain color, wait 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off. However, wipe it off faster for a lighter tone. When wiping off the stain during this part of the process, be sure to work in the direction of the wood’s grain for best results.
