"This was a deck re-stain 3 years after a complete exterior house/deck painting job, so we are repeat customers. As before, they provided solid advice, firm quote, used quality materials, workers showed up on time with COVID masks. Very nice work on both prep [power wash] and stain, two coats applied accurately, and nice job of cleanup. These folks do an excellent job, as I see fall/winter rain hitting the deck I am especially glad we had it done right."

"Outstanding! Rob Potts (the owner) and his team were easy to work with while getting estimates, scheduling work and completing the fence staining project. Everyone on their team was hard working, very helpful, paid attention to detail and did a superb job! They stained my home fence and also stained the common area fence for our HOA. I highly recommend Potts Painting and would definitely hire them again."

"I am so pleased with my experience with Hedlund Painting. I contacted Zakary to repair trim / banister damage from an anxious puppy, as well as paint my kitchen cabinets and walls. I could not be happier with the result. Micah, the project manager, was on-time, detail-oriented, and caring in my home. I really appreciated how he stayed on top of the project, and that the project completed on time. I also want to credit the MASTERFUL painter/carpenter, Jesus, who painted our kitchen to PERFECTION and MASTERFULLY repaired our trim / banisters. I could not be happier with the outcome. Jesus was meticulous, skilled, polite, on-time, and a general delight to have in our home. I could not recommend Zakary, Micah, and Jesus enough - I will definitely be reaching out to Hedlund again for future home projects."

"I have a two-level house with vinyl siding but virtually all the trim is wood including the undersides of a large deck and walkway that extends around 3 sides of my house. After procrastinating all summer about painting it myself I decided to call E&A Painting after seeing the beautiful job they did on my neighbor's house. They immediately responded to my email inquiry and I had a detailed estimate within a few days. The painters showed up as scheduled and did a great job with both painting and clean-up. I am totally pleased with the entire experience from start to finish!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Painting a damaged pool deck is not recommended if the substrate is crumbling, cracking, spalling, or otherwise actively deteriorating. Continuing deterioration will result in the paint also delaminating or flaking off the damaged surface. Minor damage such as chips or hairline cracks that are not actively deteriorating can often be repaired enough to paint over. A damaged pool deck with a lot of cracking and deterioration should be replaced for best results.

Hot, intense sunshine can cause your stain to dry too quickly, which could lead it to look uneven or patchy. If you’re staining the deck during hotter months, it’s best to do it in the morning or evening once the wood has had time to cool down. If you’re staining in cooler weather with less sunshine, the time of day won’t make as much of a difference.

The best temperature to paint a pool deck is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, because many paints and sealers require temperatures warm enough for the chemical reaction to take place for proper curing. The paint should not be allowed to freeze, and temperatures above 90 degrees can cause the paint to dry too quickly, also preventing the chemical reaction from following through to completion.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

Avoid using cleaning products that are abrasive or contain bleach or acidic components on composite decking to avoid discoloration. Early-generation Trex decking isn’t designed to handle pressure washer cleaning—and if you use them on second-generation boards, always use a low setting to avoid the risk of damage that can risk voiding your warranty.
