Small jobs welcome

"Had a great experience working with Sean and Christian to fix my fence after a windstorm brought down a tree and destroyed a few sections of the fence. They were very responsive when I first reached out and came out quickly to provide an estimate. Got the job done in a day at a very reasonable price. And they did really high-quality work. Highly recommend them."

"I bought the Angie's List coupon for eight hours of yard clean up which amounted to two guys for four hours.  They really did a beautiful job, cleaning up the leaves, mowing, removing branches from a storm, sweeping deck, trimming shrubs, edging lawn, etc. They were fast and efficient, the yard looks great.

"Agron evaluated our roof and how it was a poor quality job from the original construction. He offered us options including a simple fix (which due to the original construction probably wouldn't last) or to replace that section of the roof with a proper installation. We opted for the proper installation and it looks great and we feel good for that area of the roof (other areas could still be a problem as he noted, but we will deal with those areas as needed). They were also great at cleaning everything up and making sure we were satisfied with the state of the yard (after some bushes had slight damage). Overall I was very impressed and wouldn't hesitate to use them again if we need roof work."

"Before we began Jim made it very clear that they don't bid a job out for a specific figure, but instead work by the hour. I was a little nervous about that, but from the very get-go I was impressed by Jim and Tom's great work ethic and industriousness. Those guys are fast, and GOOD! They were polite, conscientious, and meticulous. No detail was overlooked. They also helped with the purchasing of materials -- something I was unsure about. Every morning they would swing by whatever store I needed them to, picking up supplies including decking, cabling, railings, etc. They simply purchased the materials (with receipt) and I reimbursed them directly, or they had a clerk call me so I could pay over the phone. They made everything so easy. A representative from American Metal Specialties (where we purchased the cable railings, etc.) came out to the property and was so impressed with the deck installation that AMS added Jim and Tom to their list of recommended contractors which they provide to their customers. The representative even took photos and promised to post them on their website as an advertisement for their products. Job well done, Jim and Tom! I can't imagine hiring anyone else.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

You can build an outdoor kitchen on a deck, but you should choose composite decking since it's more heat-resistant. Metal deck materials like steel and aluminum are also good choices because they're less flammable than wood. You should also consider the weight of the kitchen—make sure your deck can support it and any appliances you plan to use. You should consult a structural engineer to confirm exactly how much weight your deck can safely support when building an outdoor kitchen.

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

Some elevated decks require stairs that lead to the ground level per the local fire codes in some municipalities. In other regions, a staircase is an optional feature that can increase accessibility and convenience for homeowners who want ground-level access to their deck. Additionally, a staircase is necessary if your home doesn't have an existing door leading to the deck.
