"I reached out to Johnson & Sons and several other contractors to discuss the possibility of opening up and completely remodeling my kitchen and bathrooms, with the addition of a shower to the former half bath off the master suite. After receiving bids and meeting with each contractor, I went with Johnson & Sons due to the transparency and consideration Vic Johnson showed when discussing the project and its challenges, as well as providing a detailed quote. Because this remodel involved the removal of walls, tiling of the kitchen/bathrooms, potential size constraints, and a re-plumbing of the house, It was very important for me that things be done correctly, to code and with permits. Once demo and construction started, things proceeded at a brisk pace with minimal lag between subcontractors, and inspections. Their tile guy, Tony was great to work with and very helpful with making the appropriate detail selections around the showers. We did have a long wait for a cosmetic piece of cabinet siding, which ended up being the final part needed to complete the project. Vic was direct with me about the issue and the delay. Such a minor issue is in my opinion, very small potatoes compared to having quality work done. Ultimately, Johnson & Sons came in slightly under their contract price - a very pleasant and welcome surprise."

"The eight month long addition and kitchen remodel went well due entirely to the stellar work ethic and efforts of the personnel who were onsite each and every day. We were very happy with the subs and crew that Excel General Contractor uses. The crew were professional, punctual, and took great care with the details. We had complete faith in Oscar, who primarily led our project, and his team. The final product is beautiful and we are so happy we decided to move forward with such a big project."

"Overall the project went very well. We interviewed 5 different contractors and picked Vic because we liked his price, we liked the fact that he was going to do most of the work himself, and we felt that we could work with him. The project was supposed to be done in about a month, and ended up taking close to 2 months. Part of the delay was materials and the plumber, and a few days were lost because of surgery and a previously scheduled vacation, but ultimately we did get the bathroom and tub room we had hoped for. Although we were originally considering luxury vinyl, Vic did steer us toward tile. He did an excellent job of installing the tile on the floor and around the new tub, and it all looks beautiful. He also did several small things at the end of the project (such as replacing towel bars in another bathroom, installing a curtain rods and a shade, and replacing an electrical outlet) at no cost."

"Pros: Khoa was friendly and on-time during the project. The job site was kept clean. Great work on the plumbing and window installations. He also did a fantastic job on the mud-tape in several areas of the house. The pocket door in our bathroom was also a nice addition. Cons: We were a little disappointed with the outcome of the bathroom tile. The grout lines were too wide and the shower niche does not have that "finished bull-nose" look. Also, we had to get the shower door removed and installed by another contractor, as it wasn't installed properly. It was causing water to leak out onto the floor while showering. Granted the tub was a 60's style iron cast tub, with a slope, the sliding shower door required some special installation in order to make it level. There were a couple of miscommunication problems throughout the project. We also had a new door installed at the back of the house, but I had requested to keep the existing storm door. After the new door was installed, the storm door no longer fit. This was not remedied. Verdict: We had hired Khoa initially because of the fantastic reviews. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for us. I would think he is still a good contractor, as he did seem knowledgeable in his trade. We just expected a better job on the tile."

"I can't say enough good things about Yariel. We have used different contractors for remodeling condos for sale, but I will only use Yariel Bello going forward. He is detail conscious, creative with selecting products, and incredibly efficient. He finished an extensive remodel early, with everything completed beyond my expectations. His work included full bathroom remodel, painting, baseboards, doors, electrical, kitchen appliances, sinks, countertops, plumbing. If you are looking for someone to get a condo ready for sale, or to move in, look no further than Bello Home Solutions."

"They were a great and fabulous company.  They came in midway and did a great job on what a previous contractor had screwed up.  They finished it and fixed the problems that had gotten done wrong.  We have worked with a ton of contractors, and they have been one of the best we have ever used."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.
