J J Construction owner Khoa Ha completely replaced my upper and lower decks with composite. He solved many problems we were facing with the decks and designed a system to deflect rain water away from the house. The upper deck was 48'x12' and the lower deck 14'x21', also replaced existing stairs, added bench seating. and lights. In addition he also repaired/reflashed metal roof on the lower back of the house and address foundation concerns. His team were great to work with, hard working, professional and courteous. We could not be happier with the results of this 4 week project. I highly recommend J J Construction for any project. We will be using him on future projects as well such as house painting, and some interior remodeling in the coming year.

Earthquake retrofit of 1963 house was mostly done from the outside. Plates installed, some siding and insulation replaced, house painted. Everything was done with a concern for quality and customer satisfaction.

Khoa was great to work with. Both he and Anthony were extremely professional, very clean, and do great work. We had Khoa and Anthony replace all the windows in our house, remodeled a bathroom (vanity install, toilet, tile floor), and tore down a wall we wanted out. Khoa answered all my questions up front - provided multiple estimates on ideas we were considering - and was very competitive in his pricing! Even after dealing with multiple change order requests from my wife and I, hard to make up your mind some times :), he was a pleasure to work with and i'd recommend him to anyone.

Khoa Ha is more than just a builder/carpenter. He's a creative. By this I mean, in addition to his outstanding carpentry skill, he uses his ability to re-imagine, or to think outside the box, and this talent allows him to come up with brilliant solutions. We had an old, poorly-built, amateurish, set of outdoor access stairs leading to a tenant's upper apartment unit. They were not to code, and were coming apart. In addition to this, the front door and the side light window of the apartment unit had been framed in so badly that a 1"x1" piece of daylight was exposing the apartment to the elements! I had already received 3 bids for the job by the time Khoa met me on site. Why? I just didn't have confidence in those contractors. It requires advanced skill to build a safe set of stairs. And, as long as these stairs were going to be demo-ed, I'd hoped to improve the footprint/design/layout with the new build. Khoa saw, immediately, the problem with the existing layout as built, and quickly sketched a re-design on scrap paper. I asked myself, why didn't any of the other contractors I'd met on site, understand, or recognize that it was the existing layout/design that was flawed. The other carpenters offered to re-create the stair run in the same configuration, and, to have them take up an even larger footprint that what was existing! The footprint was restricted on all 4 sides, and was limited to a very specific, contained area. Khoa recognized the problem right away, and was able to get me to see it, as well, which gave me a great deal of confidence in his ability. As he explained, "I do this type thing all the time with stairs". When the bid came in it was nearly 2x what the other contractors' were. I was disappointed, thinking I wouldn't be able to get close enough with my budget to use him. Rather than moving on to another contractor, I simply gave Khoa the bottom line number for my project, and expected to hear him laugh. My budget was just HALF of his original estimate. And, to his credit, rather than blowing me off, he worked with me in order to shave the original bid down, in half, to fit my funding for the project. Over multiple communications with me, he dedicated himself to deciding what existing materials could be reused, and to re-thinking the use of pressure-treated materials vs. higher end lumbers. And, in the end, he was even able to include a new door and window install that needed to be included in the project, as well. It is obvious to me Khoa works very hard to build relationships and to stay flexible within a budget. The difference Khoa's re-designed has made, cannot be under-stated. My tenant is thrilled! I'm thrilled! Khoa Ha and JJ Construction will be the first I call on for my construction needs going forward. I will recommend him to any of my friends, family or colleagues who ask. Pros: Khoa was friendly and on-time during the project. The job site was kept clean. Great work on the plumbing and window installations. He also did a fantastic job on the mud-tape in several areas of the house. The pocket door in our bathroom was also a nice addition. Cons: We were a little disappointed with the outcome of the bathroom tile. The grout lines were too wide and the shower niche does not have that "finished bull-nose" look. Also, we had to get the shower door removed and installed by another contractor, as it wasn't installed properly. It was causing water to leak out onto the floor while showering. Granted the tub was a 60's style iron cast tub, with a slope, the sliding shower door required some special installation in order to make it level. There were a couple of miscommunication problems throughout the project. We also had a new door installed at the back of the house, but I had requested to keep the existing storm door. After the new door was installed, the storm door no longer fit. This was not remedied. Verdict: We had hired Khoa initially because of the fantastic reviews. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for us. I would think he is still a good contractor, as he did seem knowledgeable in his trade. We just expected a better job on the tile.

The specific Job that was done was to retrofit a home to minimize or eliminate damage that could occur due to an earthquake. The work included installing steel attachment brackets between the foundation and the house framing structure. Wood pressure blocks were added between beams in joist bays and between perimeter rim joist and sill plate. Other reinforcements were installed between support posts and beams and between posts and the concrete foundation. I was impressed with the technical knowledge that Mr Khoa had of the overall project. This of course was key to the work done by the team which I would like to stress were hard working and professional in accomplishing their work. I am very pleased with work done and would definitely recommend JJ Construction to anyone contemplating a home or building construction project. Jack Wires
