No, not all chimneys need a damper. However, most chimneys do, especially in newer homes. Most gas-burning fireplaces cannot function safely without a damper. Only some older wood-burning fireplaces can function safely without one. A chimney without a damper is essentially just an open hole in the roof of your home.

To ensure your wood stove heats the whole house, measure the square footage of your home and choose a wood stove designed to heat that amount of space. More efficient wood stoves, such as those made of soapstone or those with catalytic combustors, can more easily heat larger spaces for less money.

A liter of bioethanol costs $11 and burns for around four hours, making it cost around $2.75 per hour to keep your bioethanol fireplace running. For comparison, natural gas costs around $0.50 per hour, and propane costs around $1.60 per hour. 

How much it costs you to run your bioethanol fireplace largely depends on how often you use it. Hypothetically speaking, if you run your fireplace for four hours a week year-round, you’ll go through one liter of biofuel per week or about $570 per year to run the fireplace.

Additionally, catalytic wood stoves include a catalytic combustor that can reduce emissions and create a cleaner burn no matter what the stove is made of. Of course, the most efficient wood stoves also tend to be costlier up front—but they can still save you money in the long run.

Chimney crowns should be at least 2 inches thick at their thinnest point. If the crown is thinner than 2 inches, it’s more likely to be damaged and allow water to seep into the chimney.
