Mark is the trapeze artist who climbs to the top of the trees to cut them in sections, being precisely careful as to where it lands so as to not harm stonewalls and nearby plants. Concrete resurfacing is the process of applying a new, thin layer of concrete over an existing concrete slab to give it a fresh appearance. The new layer is often between 1/4-inch and 1-inch thick, so it involves much less material than you’d need to pour a new slab, which is often 4 inches thick. Resurfacing also gives you the opportunity to add color or texture to your slab without totally replacing it.

The repair method for a damaged concrete patio depends on the type of damage. For surface cracks, a concrete crack filler is a quick and simple fix. For larger cracks or uneven slabs, you may need to hire a professional to pump a cementitious material under the sunken portion to lift it back into place. For heavy spalling and other surface damage, resurfacing may be the best and most affordable option. This includes pouring a new layer of concrete over the old layer.

A layer of exposed aggregate concrete should be 1 to 2 inches thick if you’re installing it on top of existing concrete. If you’re pouring a new slab with the finish, slab thickness will depend on the application. Exposed aggregate concrete driveways should be 4 to 6 inches thick in most cases or 8 to 12 inches for commercial vehicles. Sidewalks, patios, and walkways should be 4 inches thick.

Resurfacing a concrete slab can be worth it if the concrete is in decent condition and has minor cracks, chips, or discoloration. If the concrete is cracked, peeling, sunken, or broken up, then replacing your concrete is probably more cost-effective in the long run and will give you a better outcome. Resurfaced concrete is only as good as the concrete underneath the new overlay material. If the concrete is peeling or cracked, the peeling and cracks are likely to show through the new surface.
