"Mike and his assistant (his son and others) performed a complete re-model of our newly purchased condo (built in 1917) in Ghent (Norfolk). HE IS FANTASTIC IN EVERY WAY - AAAA++++

EXPERIENCE IN EVALUATING CONTRACTORS:
My experience in remodels is very extensive.
I?ve personally built a large guest house from the ground up doing every trade myself; I?ve sub-contracted out three large homes complete re-models; I?ve built a new home using a general contractor. Thus, I have dealt with numerous handymen, sub contractors, contractors in every trade over the years. MIKE IS THE BEST I'VE EVER WORKED WITH.

SCOPE OF PROJECT: I hired every contractor remotely from San Francisco prior to moving out to Norfolk. Using Angie?s List and Better Business Bureau, I searched, evaluated numerous general contractors, handymen, kitchen specialist firms, bathroom specialist firms, electricians, plumbers, painters, tilers, floor refinishers, glass shower enclosures, heating /& air conditioning firms. I concluded early on that I would act as general contractor and sub out all the trades hiring an experienced ?handy man? who could also act as a general. Mike is listed under Handyman but is a General Contractor, can do every job and / or has a great list of sub-contractors for every trade and can hire them directly if need be. His portion of the job was $21,000.  The total job which we both supervised counting the entire job, all trades, was over $50,000.

BID PREPARATION: Getting estimates from afar, I had prepared an extremely detailed, line by line item list of every step that needed to be done for each trade. Pictures we had taken when we examined the condo at time of purchase were attached; my real estate agent had keys to our condo and coordinated pick-up and return for inspection and estimates by contractors. All significant materials needed to be purchased for each sub-contractor, to do the job, were decided in advance and bill of materials (which I would purchase) attached to the estimate proposal so they knew exactly what they were dealing with. Each trade got an identical email from us with no changes, thus ensuring comparability. I was searching for the best workers, at reasonable costs, and a good personality fit - most important. Numerous emails and phone call exchanges with these folks over the six weeks it took to find / select contractors (note, I didn?t check references, going on gut instinct and AL and BBB reviews) I finalized our team. I estimated about two months for the job in total, had figured out rough time frames for each trade to begin and finish. I had contracts sent / signed, and initial deposits made for the work.

The highest priority to begin work early before I moved out to Norfolk was demolition and initial minor construction (moving walls) so securing a top flight handy man (who could function as a general contractor) was crucial.

PROFESSIONALISM: MIKE and his team (his son and others) ARE TOPS. From long distance emails and over the phone, Mike and I hit it off right off the bat. He is very, very professional, super experienced in all facets of construction, helpful with suggestions and ideas, very reasonably priced (on the lower end but important, not the low end - you get what you pay for). Most important, he is a gentleman, courteous, very likeable, cheerful, extremely honest, a church goer, a family man, very responsive (always a phone call response back to me generally within an hour and always with in the day). He commenced work two weeks prior to our arrival to the condo and the project was well under way before we arrived. From San Francisco, I generally spoke once a day if he needed, a clarification or if he ran into a problem, covering the first two weeks of the job. I knew within the first day or two I had the right man for the job and needn?t worry about a thing. Not only could he do virtually every trade, he has an excellent way of dealing with other sub-contractors who genuinely liked working with him, coordinating with them, their schedules, to keep things flowing smoothly. I flew out and joined him two weeks later, living there while the work was being done.

WORK ETHIC AND HONESTY: MIKE IS EXCELLENT. Once I arrived, Mike continued every day for two months, promptly on time, never a missed day (unless an unexpected family matter came up and he always called in advance - even if he was delayed and expected to be late on site, always a call). With the exception of sub-contracting electrical, painting, floor re-finish and shower enclosure, Mike and his son and helpers did everything: moving walls, new walk in closets with new wood flooring, drywall, new doors interior and exterior, floor and ceiling molding, minor electrical, all plumbing, kitchen / laundry appliance install, install some cabinets, master bath and powder room completely redone including new tub / shower, plumbing, fixtures, and tile. He is extremely detail conscious, everything needed to be perfect by him, always opted for the best look, never cut corners, even if cut into his profits - he is a perfectionist. Always cleaning up everything at the end of the day, removing tools. Remodels, especially old homes, always run into problems not anticipated and not part of the original contract. Important: home owners always come up with new ideas, the job expands, change orders, etc. Therefore, I knew from my extensive remodeling experience I would run over budget. I can assure you that Mike was always more than fair with me, not a bean counter, he included gratuitously many little things not in the budget or he did so at minor cost addition. It became a bit of a partnership.

JOB DONE: The condo is absolutely beautiful, on time (almost, our suggested changes / additions), done to perfection at a reasonable cost, with a wonderful working relationship, hassle free co-operative manner thanks to Mike.

SUMMARY: Having done five extensive home re-models, working with all the trades and at least 100 contractors, I CAN TRUTHFULLY SAY HE IS THE BEST. His work is top notch. HIS PRICES ARE VERY REASONABLE. His work ethic superb and honesty is impeccable. Most importantly, a true gentleman and very likeable.

"Nigel showed up when he said he would, had the proper tools and equipment to install my off-brand faucet/sprayer. Due to the age of hook up under the sink, he also had to install an inside cut off valve. He preformed everything correctly and completely. He cleaned up afterwards and left everything better than it was prior to him starting. He had everything done within 30 minutes. I am very pleased and will be using his services in the future."

"Ferguson Home Improvements did a fantastic job.  All the work that needed to get done, was finished beyond my expectations.  The workers were very friendly.  The job took a little longer that expected, but Ferguson Home Improvements were not at fault, the weather played a major factor with the deck stain and door installation.  At the time the work was getting done, we received a lot of rain and storms.  All in all, I would highly recommend Ferguson Home Improvements.

"Joe from JMS Drain Services was my service technician who arrived well within the window scheduled service time. Joe came in, inspected the sink to determine how to resolve my issue, took out the tool (snake apparatus) to clear the sink, and departed my premises within 15 minutes. I was pleased he resolved my clogged sink so quickly so I could rest after a night's work. Thank you again, Joe."

"I bought a big deal earlier in the fall for 4 hours of handyman service to install a vanity in my downstairs half bath.  I scheduled the appointment two weeks in advance for 10 a.m. on a Monday morning.  At 10:15, when no one had shown up, I called to see if they needed directions.  I was told there had been a scheduling problem on the previous Friday and my appointment had to be rescheduled, but someone had forgotten to call me.  Needless to say, I was not happy because I was expecting company the next morning.   After some discussion, they said they would call me back.  By two o'clock that afternoon, Kevin came to my house and only took 2 hours to install the vanity.  He was professional and very easy to work with.   I showed him other jobs that needed doing around my house and he gave me very fair pricing.  I plan on using him again on these jobs.  I own a small business, and am the first to admit that everything doesn't always run as smoothly as I would like.  What makes the difference between a good company and a GREAT one is how you handle your mistakes.  In my opinion, Ryan's Repairs stepped up and was willing to do whatever it took to correct the scheduling error and make sure I (the customer) was completely satisfied.  I WILL use them again!"

Sink Installation questions, answered by experts

Natural stone stinks require sealing before installation because they have a porous surface susceptible to staining and damage. Quartz is much denser than natural stone, making it non-porous and resistant to stains or absorption. Because quartz is a composite material, it doesn’t need to be sealed before daily use.

Check connections, clean fixtures, and apply finishing or protective coatings to preserve months' worth of shine and functionality.

Because it’s an engineered stone, quartz composite is much denser than other natural stone alternatives. For instance, if you drop a heavy object in a natural stone sink, there’s a chance the sink could crack, chip, or dent. Quartz’s density means quartz sinks are more resistant to scratches or staining. However, darker quartz sinks are more likely to show scratches or scuffs, and quartz sinks can stain over time.

Silicone caulk—despite having some adhesive properties—is not the primary thing that holds your sink in place. Rather, it seals the gaps around the sink to prevent water from leaking and causing issues with mold and corrosion. Most sinks are secured by clips, though some sinks are secured with two-part epoxy or brackets.

Today’s standard sink stopper size is 1.5 inches. However, you can still find different sizes if your house uses an older sink stopper. Other sizes you can find in most hardware stores include one inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-3/8 inch, 1-5/8 inch, 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch, 2-1/4 inch, 2-3/8 inch, and 2.5 inch.
