"My salesman was very knowledgeable and informative of the HVAC system being replaced. The installers, Kyle and Keshawn, were wonderful. Never had a better group of people. They were very thorough and went above and beyond what was expected. Great service all the way from ARS."

"T&J Service installed a beautiful new Trane system at my home in Fairfax on May 14, 2024. They were recommended to me by my neighbor who has been using them for many years. Without a doubt, Diep and Tran are the most highly-skilled HVAC professionals that I have encountered in over 40 years. This was a very large, complex system to install and they got it done in one day. These are some of the hardest working, most dedicated guys that I've ever seen! I absolutely love my new Trane system. They even custom made a beautiful plenum for my air handler --handcrafted out of stainless steel (Diep is also a skilled metal craftsman). 5 STARS"

"My 30-year-old furnace failed on a Monday with night temps at 10 degrees. Elemental came out that day and tried to service the unit. It was unserviceable with a cracked heat exchanger. The salesperson came out at 10:00 PM at night to provide a quote for replacement. The service tech also stayed until he arrived. They didn't try to oversell beyond the equivalent of the existing unit. They replaced the entire furnace and AC units (connected) on that Wednesday (my request). I was worried that I would be overcharged given my immediate need. However, it was just the opposite. After talking with friends and neighbors who had to replace their units in the last few years, as well as a relative in the HVAC field, Elemental's price was extremely fair and reasonable. Everyone involved (repair tech, salesperson, installers) were very professional, prompt and knew their trade. I could not be more pleased with the experience and result. Assuming maintenance support will be of the same quality."

"The entire Aire Serv Team in Front Royal, starting with Aaron and Brandon, were excellent, courteous, very knowledgeable and provided very good value. Not only did they know their products very well, the quality of their installation is outstanding. They also took the time to make sure I fully understood how all worked. To any homeowner I would recommend them for any HVAC project that you are contemplating or for addressing any problems that you may encounter."

"The owners of the Winchester location, Bryan and Tiffany, selflessly worked with me to address a few concerns from a previous project (deck). Bryan took the time to understand my concerns and quickly offered ways to correct the problems (nothing structural). Additionally, Bryan went far above and beyond as compared to what I expected in order to ensure I was happy with the overall project. I highly recommend Handyman Connection of Winchester to anyone looking to have a small or large project done at their home."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

If both your furnace and AC unit are more than a decade old, it may be a good idea to replace both of them. However, your furnace can last up to three decades, and your air conditioner can typically last up to 15 years, so consulting with a pro before deciding to replace both of them is best. If it’s before that time limit for each, you can fix many problems with repairs or just replace one.

You should know the main components of an air conditioner: the condenser coils, evaporator coils, drip pan, AC filter, ducts, and refrigerant. Each part plays a key role in the performance and safety of your AC system. When tracking the source of AC issues or odors, it helps to know where to look. Your outdoor unit houses your condenser coils, fan, and compressor. Your indoor unit houses your evaporator coils, drain lines, and filter, and it connects to your ductwork.

Though it may seem redundant, you can absolutely have a central AC unit and a window AC in your home. In fact, if you place a window AC unit near your central air, it can help move the cooler air throughout your home. But doubling up on your AC methods can get pricey, so factor in cost accordingly.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

Signs that your air conditioner capacitor is bad or failing include a range of symptoms. The AC unit may not turn on at all, or it might struggle to start before shutting down randomly or in the middle of a cooling cycle. You might hear a humming or banging noise when it attempts to start, or the compressor might hum without the unit actually running. Other indicators include a smell or smoke coming from the unit, the blower circulating room-temperature air instead of cold air, and an unexpected increase in your energy bills.
