"Wilbers Painting company did an excellent job painting my gutters/downspouts and trim around my front door. I also had my front door stained which did not come out to my satisfaction the first time and I showed Wilber a picture of the door and he came back and re-sanded the door and re-stained it. It is beautiful now. Wilber stands behind his work. I would definitely hire his company again for future painting projects. Wilber and his staff were very professional and courteous. M. CASEY"

"They did a decent job at staining my deck, but they missed a few spots. I asked the owner to address this issue and he said he would send his folks to take care those spots. Unfortunately, no one ever came do those touch ups. Overall, follow up was poor and non-existent based on my experience. This is an update on my previous review. The owner reached out to me and apologized for the delay in the touch up work and promptly came back and completed the touch ups personally. Overall, I'm happy with how my deck looks. Based on this and my interaction with the owner, I do believe that this company cares about its customers' satisfaction and that my initial experience may have been an exception rather than the norm."

"Carpenter bees and woodpeckers had damaged the facia boards and trim around our house, so we asked Marvin to give us an estimate to repair the damage and paint all the trim around the house. He has a good eye and saw things we didn't see. The work took 3 1/2 days, in killer heat and humidity. The crew worked diligently and meticulously in spite of the heat. They cleaned up perfectly, leaving no mess. We are very impressed with Marvin and his crew, and will hire him again to do out interior."

"The Home Equity Contractors did an amazing job! We bought a house built in 1962 that had the original hardwood flooring and some pretty terrible vinyl flooring. Before starting the job, Bob's flooring team was very patient with us and so helpful as we picked out the new stain and flooring. They were very responsive to emails and easily reachable via phone. Trust me, I asked a lot of questions and they answered them all and kept us updated on progress. The team doing the work was fantastic, they were professional and efficient. We also needed some remodeling and worked with Elmer's team. We were widening an entryway and I wasn't sure how to handle the light switches that needed to be relocated. Elmer explained the options and gave valuable advice. He was very flexible with his schedule and accommodating to our tight schedule. After the team started work, I asked them to help by updating all of the electrical outlets and add outlets to the bathrooms. They quickly provided an estimate and completed the additional work. The team was professional and they did a great job. I would highly recommend Home Equity Contractors!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Generally, these steps are included in exterior house painting:

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Adding a second coat

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood, as this helps prevent the surface from cracking. However, it is crucial to wait for the wood to dry out completely from the chemical treatment process before applying a finish. If the wood is still wet, the paint will not adhere properly. The drying time can range from weeks to six months. To test if the wood is ready, drip some water onto a board. If the water is absorbed, the wood is dry enough for painting or staining. If the water beads up on the surface, it needs more time to dry. You can build with the wood while it's still wet, but you must wait for it to dry before painting.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.
