The differences between a bay window versus a bow window involve the number of individual windows and the angle at which both windows extend from the home. A bow window has four to six individual windows that form a curve outside the exterior wall. A bay window usually has two small windows on the edges that angle outward from the exterior wall and a large window in the middle that’s parallel to the home’s exterior wall.

The material around a window is simply called the window frame, but the individual pieces also have different names. Soundproof windows can’t completely block all noises, but they will significantly reduce sound from the road, sky, or your neighborhood’s weekend activities. Choose a soundproof window with an STC rating of at least 45 to block bass tones or loud conversations. Laminated glass windows can reduce noise by 75%. You can also add noise-reducing curtains to further muffle loud noises.

Windows may need to be replaced after a hurricane if they’re severely damaged. For example, if you have windows with blown-out glass and a cracked frame, they will need to be replaced. It’s a similar story if you have windows with noticeable water damage. However, if your window pane has small cracks but the frame is still in good condition, you may be able to repair the window.
