"This company is a disgrace and should be avoided at all costs. We replaced every window and door at the cost of 55k only to have a complete disaster from beginning to end. 14 service calls and 18 months later they just completed the work in mid December 2022. Last night I discovered yet another problem, a dent in a door panel they changed out in December. They’re a bunch of amateurs that were not prepared any of the 14 times they were at our home. I basically had to project manage their team for them to make sure they had everything covered. We should have gone to Pella instead. Incidentally, Pella were very interested in our horrible experience with Richmond Window Corporation when I spoke with them recently. Apparently it’s not the first time they’ve heard complaints like this."

You should board up windows when you need to protect your home either from intruders after a window breaks or from severe weather before you experience damage. To maintain home security with a broken window, get your window boarded immediately. If there’s a hurricane, tropical storm, or tornado expected in your area, board your windows a day or two beforehand to avoid emergency service fees.

The maximum protruding distance allowed for a bay window is determined by its flank angles. 30-degree flanks can extend about 13 to 14 inches. If the angle is 45 degrees or larger, then the bay window can stick out about 19 inches. If the window extends too far out, it would cause structural instability and safety concerns.

To tell if a window is single or double-pane, focus on the edge. Double-pane windows have two glass layers separated by a spacer, which you can usually see around the edges. For single-pane windows, it’s just one sheet of glass. Another easy trick: shine a light at the window—single-pane glass reflects once, while double-pane glass reflects twice. Lastly, if you feel both sides of the glass on a cold day, double-paned windows will feel warmer because of the insulating gap between the panes.

Tinting your windows will make your house darker since it will prevent some sunlight from getting inside. While you can choose a window film that is on the lighter side, there will still be reduced sunlight. If natural light is important to you, tinted windows might not be the best choice for your home.

Most homeowners prefer to service their windows during the spring or fall when temperatures are the most bearable, and having large openings in your wall won’t drastically increase your heating and cooling bills. However, while these seasons are the most convenient, you’ll also tend to pay more for window repair due to the increased demand. If you want to reduce labor costs, consider making window repairs in the off-seasons. Avoid waiting until the heart of winter to do repairs, though, as you could run into leaks and heat loss issues.
