" I paid Blue Mountain $200 for an annual two-visit service contract. At the conclusion of the first visit their technician said everything checked out okay. The next week we had a heat spell and my heat pump could not keep up with the outdoor temperatures. I also had their sales person visit for a bid on a new high efficiency heat-pump. He explained that my problem was that old heat-pumps lose efficiency over time. I also had a second HVAC business owner visit for a second bid on a new system. He determined my refrigerant leaked and I was 6 pounds low. I realized I had a contract and they already had my money, but I hoped they would accept responsibility for their mistakes and graciously return me. The dispatcher seemed contrite and empathetic, but she told me it was not their policy to provide refunds. Still she asked her management and they said they would not refund any money. This picture shows I received 6 pounds of refrigerant by the other contractor."

"They installed 2 toilets which I supplied, charged me $850. Had a bad valve which leaked ruined my ceiling in the Fam Room in the basement. Charged my daughter $1500 to install a bathroom vanity. My son-in-law 2 guys stand around an yak so they could over charge them. I am in Constrution Sales in the area. I feel so screwed, capable of doin all this work but no time. Plumbers typically install gas lines. When hiring a plumber, you should make sure that they have the proper licenses and credentials. While you can hire any plumber to complete this task, you may consider hiring a natural gas line plumber who specializes in moving gas lines. As long as a licensed professional installs your gas lines, you don’t have to do anything extra to prepare for cold weather. If there are pipes that require a wrap, your installer should have done it for you already. If you want to be absolutely sure your gas system is good to go for winter, the best option is to schedule a gas line inspection.

The cost of repairing a gas leak depends on the type of leak, its severity, and how difficult it is for the repair technician to reach it. Some of the most common gas line repair costs, on average, include:

  • Cap a gas line: $75–$150

  • Gas system inspection: $150

  • Pressure test: $75–$500

  • Damaged or corroded pipe: $6–$7 per linear foot

  • Repair gas leak: $120–$5,000

In North America, pipe measurements are listed as the nominal pipe size (NPS). This measurement refers to the outside diameter. As an example, a 1/2-inch copper pipe has an outside diameter of 5/8 of an inch. If a hardware store lists a pipe as having a 2 NPS, it means that all the pipes with this measurement have a 2 ⅜-inch outside diameter, regardless of wall thickness and inside diameter.

While some building codes allow galvanized pipe for natural gas, it shouldn’t be used for propane. Propane can cause the pipe to wear down, leading to dangerous leaks. Instead of galvanized piping for propane, you should consider coated copper, black iron, or corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). For underground propane line installation, you can use polyethylene (PE).
