"The owner Harvey is personable and responsive to inquiries and the price was reasonable for what was contracted. The problem is that the work was not performed well. My biggest complaint is that I specifically told Harvey that I was deciding whether to paint the cabinets or have them refaced. I asked him if he could achieve a smooth, durable surface on the cabinets and he said he could. Well, they aren't smooth or durable. I have attached pictures. Since they were not covered in polyurethane or any protective material, paint comes off every time I wipe them down. I am now faced with the prospect of having to consider that money as lost and have them replaced. They didn't sand down imperfections unless I clearly pointed it out. They frequently left paint drips, blobs of caulk and even fallen brush bristles in the paint. The painters took shortcuts by: 1. not painting the underside of cabinet doors (obviously hoping this wouldn't be noticed), 2. painting around doorknobs and hardware without covering them, so they ended up with paint splotches, 3. not covering adjacent stone tile, so it is now ruined with a layer of unremovable primer, 4. using what they admitted was cheap caulk, which immediately cracked and split, requiring them to redo it all, 5. applying paint very thinly, allowing the woodgrain to show through, which I did not want. 6. when they did the upstairs rooms, the crew was suddenly in a hurry and attempted paint walls, doors and trim without prepping anything, so it was sloppy and I was left with paint overspray everywhere. After marking imperfections and having them come out twice to make touch ups, I got tired of the process and the mess. I gave up and just did it myself."

"This company easily got my leaks repaired and then painted the inside of my home. They paid great attention to detail, were very detail oriented, and were definitely worth hiring and I would hire them again in a second."

"Bryan Davis did an amazing job on our deck. He ripped out our old deck and installed our completely new Trex deck all within 3 days. He was easy to work with and walked us through the entire process. Great service for an amazingly low price. I highly recommend them!"

"Excellent work! At least 1/3 of my roof on the north side had a great deal of moss on it. On much of the rest of the roof there were small amounts of moss along the bottom edge of shingles, and there were patches in scattered places on the main part of the shingles. After Hector and his son cleaned the roof, it looked brand new. They removed plants and furniture from our deck before the job and replaced them after the job. They even did a light washing of the vinyl siding of the house, which was outside the agreed-upon scope of work, but they did not charge me for it. As a former member of a site safety office in a then-Fortune 50 company, I was particularly impressed with the excellent precautions they took to insure their safety on the roof during the job. Hector’s 27+ years of experience was evident in every aspect of the job. I plan to bring him back in a year for annual maintenance. I definitely recommend No More Dirty Roofs to any home owner needing roof cleaning."

"I have had these guys work before, and they always do an excellent job-
especially since right in the middle of their work, I had all my carpet in my house replaced-
They took that in stride-
all painting was done well,
only had some issues with some of the doorknobs (wrong screws)
and a fan that was defective,
but they came in, did a wonderful job,
cleaned up after themselves
answered all my questions.
If they happened to miss some spots, I would point those out,
and they would fix them to my satisfaction-
job was completed in a timely manner-
I would not hesitate to rehire Steve and his team to do anything I needed done.
Very reliable, great workers."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Yes, but ensuring the deck has a solid foundation with adequate footings is critical before building, as the weight of a sunroom will put significant pressure on the structure below. Even if your deck is properly constructed, it may not be able to handle the extra weight. While some basic, lightweight, prefabricated sunrooms can sit on a deck with a strong existing foundation without additional supports, in many cases, the foundation and joists will need reinforcement. It is always best to have a structural engineer perform an inspection to evaluate the deck's quality and structural integrity. A professional can help you decide if reinforcement is sufficient or if it's better to tear down the deck and start over.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.
