"Excellent work! At least 1/3 of my roof on the north side had a great deal of moss on it. On much of the rest of the roof there were small amounts of moss along the bottom edge of shingles, and there were patches in scattered places on the main part of the shingles. After Hector and his son cleaned the roof, it looked brand new. They removed plants and furniture from our deck before the job and replaced them after the job. They even did a light washing of the vinyl siding of the house, which was outside the agreed-upon scope of work, but they did not charge me for it. As a former member of a site safety office in a then-Fortune 50 company, I was particularly impressed with the excellent precautions they took to insure their safety on the roof during the job. Hector’s 27+ years of experience was evident in every aspect of the job. I plan to bring him back in a year for annual maintenance. I definitely recommend No More Dirty Roofs to any home owner needing roof cleaning."

"I think he was a little too busy during the time I had him come out.  When I called to confirm he was coming he didn't seem to remember that he was to be there and once he got there seemed in a rush to leave since it was at the end of the day.  I signed up for the $125 for 4 hours of drywall repair and he was there for about 2 hours.  In all fairness on that count, I just had no clue what it all entailed so might not have been a legit 4 hour job. I had read so many great reviews on this company I really thought maybe he was just swamped and wanted to give him another shot as I have a great deal of stuff I want to do around my house.  I asked what other work he did because I had a rather large deck I needed power washed and stained.  He came out to take a look said he would get back to me with a written estimate.  Never heard back.

"We have hired Dave for numerous projects, including flooring, painting, and a gorgeous master bath redo, and would hire him again in the future without a doubt. He is reliable, kind and fair. His work is terrific and he managed to work with us through various unexpected delays on these projects, including HOA approval, a change to the deck plan, plumbing store misplacing our order, etc. We've been working with Dave on redoing our house for over a year now and love his work. We also felt very comfortable having him work in the house while we were on vacation on several occasions. "

"The job went fine; owner was very agreeable to applying a product my husband had already purchased. His pricing is fair market value. He arrived both the days he scheduled with us and worked steady each time. He and his crew were polite, honest, and we would most likely use him again for cleaning the house. The deck should not need another treatment for some years."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Finding a reputable deck builder should start with speaking with a local company and asking for samples of past work and references. You can review the company’s workmanship and speak with past customers to learn what the customer service was like throughout the process. It’s also a good idea to read online reviews and check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website to see if the company has a history of customer complaints. If you can get a referral from a family member or friend, that’s another great option.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

Many composite decking manufacturers, including the popular Trex brand, offer warranties that protect against warping under specific conditions. These warranties typically last between 20 and 50 years, but they usually exclude claims related to improper installation of the product. Some manufacturer warranties only cover decks built by certified professionals.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.
