"Very happy with the work done. Price was very reasonable. Work crew was professional, courteous, and efficient. House roofing and skylight were replaced in one day, and the shed roofing replacement took place early on the second day. No down payment was required before work began. Very happy with appearance of new roof, skylight, and flashing."

"I also had my roof and trim capped. I can't express my gratitude for the prompt and professional delivery of services.  Star Home Improvements was absolutely phenomenal from the initial estimate through completion.  I was kept abreast of everything as it was transpiring.  Star Home Improvements' Roland Hook was amazing as was the office manager and crews.  I will definitely use them again and highly recommend their services.  Â"

"These guys are the best. The roofing materials were second to none, the workmanship was stellar, and the job was done fast and ahead of schedule (and ahead of the rain!!). Also, the price was right. I would definitely recommend HCR to anyone. Oh, and their cleanup was second to none. I found only three nails and they were pretty well buried! And I almost forgot - they were able to color match to my old roof almost perfectly."

"Erie Homes was great. Ty and Chris shared the information about roofs in a clear and precise way. I love the high quality of the roofing materials and the standards they hold their workers to when placing the roof. Mike called me each step of the way, so I was prepared when the roofing supplies showed up. I even got calls after the beautiful roof was done. Amazing job!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

If your roof is nearing the 20-year mark in age, you probably should start worrying about the roof’s longevity. If you don’t know the age, it may be time to figure out who installed your roof, so you can estimate the age accurately. You then can make plans to pay for the upcoming roof replacement. You also can learn how to inspect a roof yourself to look for signs of damage that may indicate a need for a replacement.

You can replace a roof in the winter, though it’s not the most popular time to do so. The biggest drawback of winter roofing work is the weather. Snow and ice make for dangerous, slippery working conditions. Plus, shingles can only be installed in temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees.

The best time to replace a roof is in the spring or fall when the weather is mild. However, you can likely save some money by booking the job in the winter off-season, when roofers have more availability.

The principal, common, and auxiliary rafters are the most frequently used types of rafters. Principal rafters are large and typically appear toward the edges of the roof. Common rafters are smaller than principal rafters. Some people may use a mix of common and principal rafters. The auxiliary rafter is not common, but it provides extra reinforcement for a principal rafter on a large building.

A standard roof can hold a live load of about 20 pounds per square foot. However, gable roofs often have steeper-than-average slopes, so calculating their weight capacity can be challenging. If the slope of your gable roof is greater than 4:12, the live load needs to be decreased to allow for a larger dead load. Ask your roofer exactly how much weight your roof can support.

There are several signs that indicate you’ll need new underlayment. Clear signs include missing or damaged roofing and exposing the underlayment to the elements. Additionally, if you notice water damage in your home by the roof after a storm, it could indicate that your underlayment may need to be replaced. If your gutters aren’t draining properly, it could also lead to rotting or water damage to the underlayment.
