27 years of experience

Painting By Shawn, is a second generation painter. He has been painting in the Hampton Roads are for over 18 years

"Shawn was hired to paint the interior of the house. He sprayed the upstairs and failed to cover the trim and ceiling, leaving overspray in numerous locations. The house was vacant and he had four weeks to complete the job. He prepped the downstairs to be painted but didn't paint all of it. He sprayed the living room and the dining room and again, there was overspray on the trim and ceiling, requiring the ceiling and trim to be painted even though that wasn't necessary until he painted the walls. He consistently said he would be finished "in a day or two" and when I arrived to meet him at our scheduled walk-through he was a no show. The house was in disarray and the job was left unfinished. He did not receive final payment, but had already received 2/3 of the payment. He refused to respond to calls or texts and we never heard from him again. Do not hire him! He will take your money and run."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

Both paint and wallpaper can work in a bathroom, provided you choose high-quality products in either category. Washable vinyl wallpapers can stand up to bathroom humidity without peeling, as can semi-gloss or gloss paint finishes. However, if you’re someone who likes to redecorate often, paint may make it easier to change colors or designs more quickly. If you want full humidity protection and cleanability, tile or stone works better.

While peel-and-stick wallpapers require no time to cure, the adhesives for other types of papers will take a day or two to dry and up to three weeks to fully cure. The differences are the type of paper, the type of adhesive, and the humidity and temperature in the space.

Putting up new wallpaper tends to take one to two days, depending on the size of the area, whether old paper needs to be removed, and if there is any damage to walls that needs to be smoothed over or fixed.

Once again, contact with moisture is the culprit here, though water-resistant varieties of wallpaper are less likely to become wet and develop mold. Using a high-quality exhaust fan or dehumidifier and leaving the doors or windows cracked after bathing will keep this issue at bay.

Most experts would not recommend hanging wallpaper over existing wallpaper more than twice. Even if the walls are in good condition and primed well, that third layer of wallpaper could cause problems with adhesion. Unless you like bubbling paint and peeling wallpaper as an interior design choice, it’s better to remove at least one existing layer before adding any more to a wall.
