"Splash of Colors painted the interior and exterior of my house back in 2008. Wally did a superior job so there was no question that I would call him back again for my current painting needs. I sincerely appreciate his prompt and professional service and I highly recommend him! Splash of Colors is the BEST!"

"Eric Painted all of the interior of my tri level home. He was kind, professional, and very detail oriented. He went above and beyond, making sure that every wall and ceiling were meticulously coated. This was not an easy task since my walls were going from being green and red to all white! This is the best paint job my home has ever had! I will definitely use his services again in the future and refer him to everyone I know. Thanks again, Eric!"

"I just purchased a home, and initially requested a quote for interior painting of walls & ceiling. Eventually, I ended up using Jose's contracting services for a renovation of the interior of the house. The services included electrical, plumbing, tile flooring and shower replacement. I have used Jose's painting services a few times in the past for different properties, but this was the first time I used his contracting services. He installed recessed lights, ceiling lights, ceiling fans, dishwasher, bathroom vanity with top and faucet, toilet, porcelain tile flooring thru-out (1300sf.); replaced old shower walls & floor with ceramic tile, niche and glass inserts; painted kitchen cabinets and replaced exterior doors. His price was reasonable, and I was very satisfied with the outcome."

"We were very pleased with the jobs performed. The crew power washed, rolled and brushed our exterior brick home, as well as the trim and shutters. The job was expected to take 7-10 days, and everything was completed within 10 days. The owner was very informative and easy to work with. When a change was requested with our trim and shutter colors, he made a suggestion as to one of the changes we discussed, and we were very pleased that we went with his suggestion. The end product turned out even better than expected. Also, the price was very reasonable. I would highly recommend W.W. MV & Son Painting."

"Charles and his crew did a great job for us. Both the staff in our home, the folks we dealt with on phone, Brian & Rick were all professional and polite. Charles and the men he worked with here were on time, careful of our property, and professional in all they did. We would definitely hire Power House Painting again."

"From the estimate to the finished job Denis and his team were excellent! They were on time, prepared to work every day. Our job took about 5 days and was not an easy task. We have a lot of heavy furniture in small rooms, popcorn ceilings, red walls going down to pale yellow, drywall repairs, etc. At the end of each day they cleaned up so well that you wouldn't have known they had been there. DGR is a family business that takes great pride in doing the best work possible. The drywall repairs and the painting were meticulously finished. Not a drip, drop or dab of paint on any of the stained trim or floors. We are so happy with our home now and would definitely recommend Denis and his company to everyone. One more thing, the cost for our job was fabulous!"

Painting questions, answered by experts

You shouldn't paint a metal fence. Painting doesn't necessarily damage a corrugated metal fence, but these types of fences are meant to flex, and paint can easily chip and break off. Latex paints can address this issue, but those tend not to be very weather-resistant. Certain paints can trap moisture in the corrugation, which can rust the metal and lead to corrosion. And finally, if you paint a copper fence, it won't patina, which is one of the main reasons people buy copper.

Generally, these steps are included in exterior house painting:

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Adding a second coat

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

A five-gallon bucket of deck stain will cover roughly 875 square feet in a single coat. Actual coverage will vary based on the type of wood you’re staining and the number of coats. If you plan on doing multiple coats, multiply the square footage by the number of coats to calculate how many buckets of stain you’ll need.

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.
