"We had a wonderful experience working with Thomas Custom Builders (TCB) from start to finish on our home addition. We added a master bed and bath, unfinished basement, and screened in porch. First and foremost, we went with TCB for this renovation because we felt like they provided high quality services at a competitive price. We felt very comfortable undertaking a big project like this with TCB because unlike some of the other builders and architects we met, TCB listened to our ideas and concerns and helped us to visualize exactly what we need in a renovation and within our budget. They worked with us patiently through changes in ideas and scale of the project. Then throughout the actual renovation, the TCB staff were amazing. Brian was onsite the entire time, overseeing every aspect of the project, with absolutely no issues. It was great to have the same person there every day and it was very clear that he knew exactly what he was doing and what we wanted/needed. Work was always done within a reasonable time frame and with high quality. The TCB team finished everything within 3 months, which was even faster than we had even anticipated. We would absolutely recommend TCB to our family, friends, and neighbors and use them again."

"I had the pleasure of working with Terry and her team at Bitarchitects to help me get a building permit and certificate of occupancy. This location had no architectural plans so Terry had to start from scratch. They were able to achieve the goal and also help me through the permitting process along the way. Any time a new task was needed they helped complete it timely with great communication. I would highly recommend."

"Todd has been awesome to work with. We asked him for help designing a 2 phase addition that would include work on all sides of our existing house and every floor of the house. He has helped us through the entire design process, answered all our questions, made very good recommendations and answered questions from our builder and the county permit office. His work has been quick, accurate, and affordable. I highly recommend using him for your next design project."

Customers say: Quality work

"House plans in Prince William County. Mr. Bill Tucker and his team were great people to work with. They did an excellent work with my my new home plans, they were very professional and completed the project in a short period of time, they were able to revise and revamp a product from another company. The final product was to my entire satisfaction I would gladly recommend them to others looking for an architect. By now, my new home plans have been approved by the county and I am happy to continue with my dream project. Build my own Home."

"I hired Baumann's Lawn and Landscape to fix my front lawn. The soil was mostly clay and sand and covered in weeds. They killed and removed all the vegetation, tilled the soil, brought in new topsoil, conditioned/fertilized, and then laid sod. The crew was fast, efficient, polite, and did an amazing job (hopefully this site allows me to upload photos after writing this). The work was done in 3 separate days and took less than 2 weeks from the initial phone call to the finished installation. The price is what you would expect for this level of work and that much sod (sod is not cheap). They're not over-priced but it's not Bob's discount landscaping either. You'll get your money's worth for your project. Baumann's will be my #1 choice for future landscape projects."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Aging-in-place universal design features can make your home more comfortable for family members who are older or have disabilities; they can also make your home safer. In addition, adding a universal-design bathroom can boost your home’s overall resale value.

There are differences between universal design and ADA accommodations, but the outcomes are often similar. While universal design is a proactive process that takes a social justice approach to accessibility for all, ADA accommodations are focused specifically on accessibility for individuals living with disabilities. ADA accommodations often take the shape of wider doors and hallways, ramps, elevators, lower counters and sinks, and easy-to-grab door handles; universal design can include these plus emphasize better lighting, tractioned floors, and other building elements that allow all people to use buildings more comfortably.

Balancing aesthetics with functionality amidst space planning is important. To do so, you could consider consulting both an interior designer and an architect to fulfill both these needs. Or you can tackle it on your own by prioritizing personal touches amidst space planning that add to the look but don't take away from the livability of the space.

Open floor plans can come with drawbacks—mainly the lack of privacy and noise dampening. Walls act as an important barrier for traveling sounds, meaning in an open floor plan you could hear your dishwasher running while sitting in your living room. Storage limitations and separation of activities (for example, keeping the kid’s playroom away from the dining room) are other reasons some homeowners are opting out of an open floor plan.

While classic Palm Springs architecture in the Palm Springs area will naturally cost more due to the high cost of living, prices across the rest of the country will vary. Remember that older homes, including those built before 1970, will cost more to renovate due to updated building codes—something to keep in mind when considering the upfront cost of the house.
