"Chris, Luis and Travis were great! They were easy to reach and quick to visit us (despite our post-snowstorm driveway conditions). They all communicate well and ensure an understanding on both sides every step of the way. Travis and a colleague were both courteous while in our home and did a nice, clean install of a new water softener and sediment filter. We’re very happy with the service we received so highly recommend Plumbing Champions!"

"There was a Culligan system in our new house. I had them come in to service the unit because we were having horrible iron staining issues. They did a review of the system and maintenance and said it was now working fine. The horrible staining persisted. We then had Kinetico come in, recommended by a neighbor. We found out the system was not working at all. They installed a new system for a decent price. It uses a good deal less salt. I have had no staining and the soft water is exceptional and does not taste salty at all. We had Robert come back a few weeks later and retest our water and it is perfect. After a month there is still no staining. Before it would stain within 3 days. We are extremely happy with this system, our salt use is minimal and there wonâ t be any maintenance for years."

"Arrived when promised.  Same installation team that replaced my water softener, so they were familiar with my configuration and I was familiar with their work.  They removed the old water filter and installed a new one.  This required some new water lines.  They installed a shut-off valve on the supply side of the filter, recognizing that I had no such shut-off valve and could only shut off the water by shutting off the electricity to the pump at the circuit breaker.  This was a very thoughtful and much appreciated action on their part.  It is evident that they take pride in their work, which instills confidence.

"QH20 promptly called me back on the holiday weekend when I was searching for a contractor. The other contractors didn’t respond until after the July 4th Holiday weekend. The QH20 crew promptly and efficiently replaced my 31 year old water filtration system tank with the new filtration tank Product in a couple of hours after arriving with no mess. I had to depressurize and drain my old system tank twice a year to install a calcite medium, but the QH20 new system only needs maintenance servicing by QH20 every few years or so as per QH20. My old system was very loud and vibrated a lot, and we cannot even hear the new one back flushing. I have Iron water, and the new system is doing a good job with the iron so far."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No, hard water isn’t dangerous. The added calcium in hard water can contribute to good bone health. However, it can also cause dry skin and hair. If you have dry skin or hair, consider using a water-softening system to help minimize the minerals in your water. Plus, these systems can also add some sodium to your diet.

A water softener removes minerals from your drinking water and can make your house water softer. These softeners are designed to extend the lifetime of your plumbing system while also making water safer and more palatable for drinking. Hard water, which is water with a heavy amount of suspended particles, can also cause hair damage, skin irritation, and buildup in your pipes.

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs
