Before you begin a plaster DIY project, you need to know which tools and type of plaster to use. It's also important to know how to prepare the surface and apply the plaster for a smooth finish. If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

You will be placing holes in the wall to hang the mounting bracket. If you’re mounting a large TV, the bolts in use could make significant holes around half an inch in diameter. Other than a few holes, though, the process of mounting the TV should not cause significant damage to the wall, unless you make an error and miss the wall stud, tearing out drywall. Should you decide to remove the mount later, the DIY drywall repair cost for a small hole usually is $10 to $30. It’s a repair you can do in a few minutes.

You’ll want to inspect your plaster walls for signs of damage before painting. If you notice soft spots, deep cracks, bubbling, or areas where the plaster is crumbling or pulling away from the wall, it likely needs repair. While small hairline cracks are common and likely cosmetic, you should address larger issues before painting to ensure a quality, smooth finish.

Painting or plastering over water-damaged wall plaster is only a temporary fix and doesn’t fix the real problem. If you must, wait until the surface is completely dry before applying a new layer.
