"DO NOT use this company. I went through Lowes to have a composite deck built. Working with them was an absolute nightmare. It took them 3 months to even START the job. I discovered the reason for the delay is because when they filed the permit (which took them 6 weeks to do), the contractor's license was expired. It then took them another 5 weeks to update their license in order to get the permit. They ordered and installed a completely differently railing style than what was on the contract/design, then blamed me for the mistake. Rather than ordering a new product, they cut the existing one to make it work. I am now 9 months post project, and the railing has warped, the deck is sloped, and the overall quality is horrible. Worst of all, turns out they NEVER GOT IT INSPECTED! I learned that Lowes had to fire them due to MULTIPLE issues with the company. I am thankful I have Lowes to help rectify the issues, but if i didn't, I would be pursuing legal action against them!"

Archadeck of Northern Virginia West is the leading builder of outdoor living spaces in Loudoun and western Fairfax Counties. We're known for creating outdoor living spaces that seamlessly work into the existing design of your property, building new structures that look as if they were always part of our clients' homes. We're proud to say we don't offer a catalog full of ready-made decks, patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, and more, nor do we charge by the square foot. Every design is one-of-a-kind and custom made for our clients.
"I contacted numerous contractors to get estimates to repair and separate estimates to convert the screened porch to a 3 season room. Out of all of the companies, Todd Bayliss of Archadeck, was the only one to follow through on estimate to repair and separate estimate to renovate. Also, he was by far the most responsive when I contacted him with questions and changes to the plans. When I finally decided to accept his proposal he told me he could start in two weeks which I understood because of special order skylights but it was actually under two weeks because he replaced the crushed roof beams and then replaced the plywood on the roof and then shingles. He found the exact size skylights even though other contractors said they didn’t make that size anymore. I am extremely pleased with the completed job and wish I had called Todd Bayliss of Archadeck first. I would have saved many weeks and months that was wasted waiting on other contractors getting back to me."

"When we contracted with Bartz Landscaping in November 2019 (after getting estimates from three contractors), their BBB rating was A+. Now it is down to C+, and I can see why. We had a problem with rainwater flooding in our back yard, and Bartz provided two options, a yard length drainage ditch (rock filled) or French Drain (with no ditching necessary) Strongly recommended was the installation of the supposedly much superior French Drain, eliminating the need for any ditching, and it was this for which we opted. This was done in November 2019, but the flooding continued afterward (it would drain after an hour or more, but we were told that there should be no pooling whatsoever with the French Drain). They came back a couple of times to make some minor modifications, but none of them were effective. The only way to eliminate the flooding was for me to dig my own partial trench, something that should not have been necessary given the French Drain. When I asked them to replace my trench with a “professional” one as part of the original contract to alleviate the flooding, since the French Drain had not lived up to their promise, they said this was extra and would require additional cost. Supposedly an estimate was sent, but it was never received - The following was my last correspondence with the contractor on 11/09/2020, to which there was no response; "When you send estimate, include diagrams for both the estimate work and the no-charge options (i.e; remove pop up and recontour exit area). The original estimate never arrived for the creek bed and pipe extension. I do not agree that this should be considered additional work, as the original goal was to eliminate the pooling completely, which the French Drain alone has not done. Nonetheless, send the estimate and we will decide. Thank you" Since there was no response to this final email, I felt that the contractor wished not to be bothered by me anymore. Having already sunk $1500 into the French Drain which, at best, was only partially effective, I opted not to waste more money with them to do something they should have done for free as part of the original promise to alleviate the flooding problem. I lost confidence in their alleged “expertise” in drainage. Also, note that the response statement "we made professional suggestions and they were not followed (due to not accepting the proposal) is not accurate. We were given two alternative proposals originally, creek bed OR French Drain, the latter being strongly recommended over the former as much superior eliminating any need for any type of creek bed. It turned out that a partial creek bed was needed after all, which I dug myself. There was never any discussion to accepting BOTH proposals, especially since the French Drain was supposed to stand alone to eliminate the problem without any ditching."

Virginia Deck Builders specializes in deck resurfacing, deck restoration and we also offer deck repairs, maintenance and replacement. We build decks, pergolas, gazebos, porches, sunrooms, patios and under deck roof & storage.
"Caution: fraud, theft. We hired Nikolay Jantic of Virginia Deck Builders in October 2023 to complete a three-seasons room porch remodel. The contract stipulated that the project would be done by February 2024 by a licensed contractor. Nikolay's license (2705177868, Deck Dream LLC doing business as Virginia Deck Builders) was revoked by Virginia DPOR in December 2023 and as of May, he is UNLICENSED ([*** Link removed ***] He has multiple violations listed on the DPOR website. To date, our project is still unfinished and we are owed significant funds. Nikolay is unresponsive to communications. This company calls themselves an "Angie's List Super Service Award Winner" on their contract. However, the company has committed fraud and theft and I do not recommend their services."

Yes, you should confirm that the fencing installer you hire is insured before proceeding with the job. In most cases they do not need a specific fencing license, but rather a general contractor’s license. Hiring a licensed contractor protects you as a homeowner from fraud, poor work, and potential legal woes.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
Licensing and certification are not necessary.
The average cost to install a fence is between $1,760 and $4,500. These costs are what an average homeowner spends, but you might spend more or less depending on several factors. For a smaller DIY project, you might get away with spending as little as $430, or for a much larger project (like fencing for a 5-acre yard), you can spend in excess of $43,000.
Besides the size of your yard, other factors like your fence material, fence height, site prep, and additional fence features like gates all impact the overall cost. Additionally, the high cost of raw materials and manufacturing can all make the overall price tag higher.
The overall cost of a fence project depends on numerous factors, including the size of your yard, fence material, fence height, site preparation, and additional features like gates.
Before you hire a fence installer to build you the fence of your dreams for your yard, it’s important to set expectations up front by asking questions. Some questions to consider include:
Do you offer a warranty?
Do you offer financing or a payment plan?
Do you have references?
Do you have photos of previous work?
What type of fencing materials do you work with?
Do you have references?
Are all fasteners exterior (galvanized)?
How deep are you concreting the post?
What is the lowest maintenance fencing?
How will you deal with slopes?
Only some fences require a permit to build. Factors like where you live, how tall your fence will be, and where in your yard you plan to build all impact the need to have a permit. Below are a few examples of when a permit is needed; it’s always best to check with your fence installer to confirm if a permit is required.
Generally, if you live somewhere rural, like on a farm, there’s a good chance you will not need a fence permit. However, you will most likely need a permit if you live in a highly populated area. In addition, many privacy fences in your backyard won’t need a permit if it is 6 feet or shorter. However, you might need a permit for anything over 3.5 feet in your front yard.
Any solid panels over 8 feet in height will require a permit, while a 2-foot lattice top on a 6-foot fence does not require a permit.
Fence installers typically charge by the hour when working on a project. Typically, you can expect to pay around $50 per hour for fence installation. Your project might take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the length of your fence, overall project complexity, and fence type.
