"I recently posted two jobs I wanted help with on Angi’s list. Anthony, the owner of Artista Painters and Remodelers was the first company to reach out to me. I could tell quickly that he truly enjoys what he does and that he seemed very credible. He was able to go to my house the same day we spoke and he provided me a reasonable quote. He also mentioned he thought my front door needed some attention and I agreed with him. The next day he and his team started the job. They redid two fence posts so the gates could close easily and sanded and stained my front door. They also polished my granite counters in my kitchen. He communicated well during the job which I appreciated as I was out of town. I am very pleased with his professionalism l, his rates, and his solid communication. I look forward to working with him on other projects."

"Joey is awesome! He is professional, honest, dependable and a super nice guy. The same goes for his crew. They did several jobs for me to include: staining my front door, concrete porch, fence, deck, benches and tables. They also power washed my deck and screened porch. Joey was always available when I called or texted. He and his crew were punctual and worked continuously only to break for lunch. He was determined to complete all jobs to my satisfaction. If you’re in need of a great painting company, I highly recommend Joey Cortez and Alamo City Painting."

"Our kitchen island looks great! We had the kneewall tiled in a white marble haringbone pattern with black grout. Steve and his co-worker were timely, professional and they don't smoke. The job site was kept neat at all times. The project cost exactly what the estimate stated. The tile installation is perfect. We have already decided to work with Finishing Touches Tile for our next project. The cost below does not include materials."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.
