"I CANNOT say enough good things about Tecton. Aaron Utter and his team were incredibly patient and catered to every ask on this project, bringing our dream patio to life. He pays attention to every detail and ensures it's done accurately, even if that meant doing the masonry himself folks. We don't like our new living space... we love it. I highly recommend Aaron as a Mason, an honest contractor, and as an all-around good human. Instead of putting extra money in his pockets, he makes recommendations for you per YOUR budget, not his. 10/10 and more than 5 stars are deserved. Dreaming up another project in 3, 2, 1..."

"Rafter JK Masonry created a doorway through the brick wall dividing our garages. James estimated two days to complete the project and that is what it took. He kept me informed and checked in when he had a question. The work is fantastic and I hope to hire them for future work."

"Foundation repair for detached garage. Relatively simple job, but happy with the results and how the crew conducted themselves when on my property. Would hire again, and recommend as well."

"Professional, honest assessment. While there was work that needed to be done on my home and my preference was to work with his company, he recommended that I work with the original contractor to maintain the warranty. I sincerely appreciated his honesty and recommendation. The work was completed by the original contractor, however I would definitely recommend Olshan's if you need initial foundation repairs conducted at your home."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

Discoloration ondifferent types of brick can range from harmless to red flag. For example, efflorescence that is caused by a buildup of water-soluble white salt is considered harmless. However, green or greenish-yellow stains are caused by salts that are harmful to brick. Staining can also be caused by rust, corrosion, lime run, soot, algae, or moss.

The cost of masonry work varies widely depending on the type of masonry along with common cost factors like size, complexity, location, and season. Most exterior masonry work done in freezing temperatures tends to cost more because of the preparation and protection involved to keep the masonry from freezing before the mortar cures properly. The average price ranges per project or square foot for different types of masonry include:

  • Brick wall (fence, garden wall, etc.): $10–$45 per square foot

  • Natural stone wall: $40–$110 per square foot

  • Manufactured stone veneer: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Brick home exterior: $10–$30 per square foot

  • Brick siding: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone siding: $35–$50 per square foot

  • Brick step replacement: $20–$30 per square foot

  • Brick wall repair: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Chimney repairs: $160–$750 per project

  • Tuckpointing: $5–$25 per square foot

Chimney mortar typically lasts 20 to 30 years, depending on its quality, local weather conditions, and maintenance. Over time, exposure to moisture, freezing, and thawing cycles can cause mortar to deteriorate, leading to cracks and gaps. Regular inspections and timely repairs, such as repointing or tuckpointing, can extend the lifespan of chimney mortar by ensuring the structure's integrity.

Real stone is exactly what it sounds like: It’s real stone sourced from the earth without additives. It is durable and unique, but it’s difficult to work with because of its weight, challenge in sourcing, and high cost. Stone veneer mimics the look of real stone but is actually engineered with a mixture of Portland cement, natural minerals, and a colorant. While it’s more affordable and easier to work with, it’s less durable and may appear manufactured to the trained eye.
