"This is an engineered wall which is intended to preserve the clay pad upon which our home was constructed.  The home is on a downhill slope.  The contractor respected all manufacturer recommendations regarding installation.
The crew seemed seasoned, both in terms of the type of work, and also as a working team.  The management partners are hands on participants and spent every day on site.
The project included not only hardscaping, but also plumbing and electrical aspects.  The crew seemed comfortable performing the required tasks.
We found the guys to be pleasant to have around.  Given that the blocks weigh about 50 lbs each, the temperature was as high as 105, and the work surface challenging, the cheerful smiles were actually something of a miracle.
We had agreed generally on the wall design, but left many design decisions up to them.  We are very pleased with the aesthetics of the final product.  Their instincts are good.
Our greatest frustration was probably with regard to communication and scheduling, BUT this job was booked during the most rainy Spring on record, and the installation took place over a 2.5 week period when temps were above 100 every day.  That at
least partially explains the delayed start and the longer than expected execution.  At those temperatures, a break is required after about every 20 minutes of labor.
The above concerns are offset by the fact that because management is on-site, feedback is immediate and there are no communication problems during the project execution."

"I had about a 250' section of our driveway repaved and a new section added to make a bigger turning radius on a road that branches off at an angle from the main driveway. We also had a section oiled that hadn't been done for awhile. I found the owner to be very professional and would certainly use Stokes again for any future work. I only gave a 4 on work quality and it may be less to do with their application than it is just working with asphalt but I have some areas that are cracking and edges of the driveway that have crumbled (I assume from driving the zero turn across the driveway to get to the other side. Sometimes I wish that I would have initially gone with concrete but I like the look of asphalt out on a country road better. All-in-all...great company to work with?"

"Matt was able to start my project 4 days after he came out and gave me a quote. Matt and his crew did an excellent job resurfacing my driveway and putting in a walkway for us. On time, on budget and an outstanding job, it doesn't get any better than that. John Cox"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Overall, a paver driveway is considered the easiest to maintain because homeowners are able to do driveway repair one piece at a time without impacting the rest of the driveway. Unlike paved options, paver driveways contain individual stones that aren't physically connected. By comparison, you may need to reseal or redo a full asphalt driveway if just one portion sustains a significant crack.

DIY is not recommended due to equipment and expertise requirements. Professional services ensure durability and proper grading.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.
